Diu is an island off the saurashtra coat of Gujarat, which is a union territory of India. It was a colony of the Portuguese for almost 451 years, before Indian Government took over in 1961.

Diu is a beautiful island located off the Saurashtra coast of Gujarat. The Diu Island has an area of 40 square kilometers. The island Diu is located very close to the Malabar Hills, Nawabandar, Gogola, Kora, Akarpati, Dores,and Podome. Since Diu has an annual rainfall of about 700 millimeters, the climate remains cool and dry most of the time.
Sight seeing / Places to visit in the Diu
Nagoa Beach is a perfect looking semi circle shaped beach where you can have a fun filled time swimming. lazing in the sun in the silvery sands of the beach under the shade of the palm trees. Nagoa beach is located in the Bucharwada region of the Diu district.There are some more beaches located in the near vicinity which are also favourites among the locals as well as the tourists, they are Gomptimata, Chakratirth and Sunset Point are the other favorite beaches located a short distance away.
Panikotha-Fortim Do Mar is a ship shaped, fort like structure and said to be connected with the land by a tunnel built under the sea. This fort like structure comprises of a light house and chapel and is located right at the mouth of the creek. One has to reach the place either by a canoe or a boat.
Ghoghla Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches of the Diu district.Ghoghla beach is one beach where you can go swimming, sunbathe, go for parasailing and surfing etc. You can laze in the beach and watch beautiful and spectacular sunset. The clean, calm and serene of the beaches at Diu makes one wish the teip never ends and continues like this for a long time.
Jallandhar Shrine is located near the beach on top of a small hillock. The shrine is crowned with a dome and contains a stone which has a carving of face of King Jallandhar. There is another temple nearby which is dedicated to Goddess Chandrika. The beach is located at about a kilometer from the Diu town.
Somnath temple is located near Veraval at about 90 kilometers from the town Diu. The Somnath Shiv temple is said to be legendary one and one of the 12 most reverred and sacred shrines of India.
Gir Forest and the wild life Sanctuary, which is said to be the the only home of the Asiatic Lions. is located at just about 40 minutes drive from the Somnath temple.
Diu Fort seems to have been built between the years 1535 and 1541 AD. This Fort is a big and arresting, magnificient structureis found along the coastal part of the Island. The interiors of the fort would overwhelm one by the majestic stonework done in those times and would mentally take you back to the golden era of the Fort and the dwellers.
St.Thomas Church is located in the Diu Island and it seems to have been set up in in the end of 16th century.
St Thomas Church has been transformed into Diu Museum. This was done to highlight the archaelogical significance of the church and the things it contains like statues, idols, wooden carvings, shadow clocks and other significant relics.

How to Reach Diu in India
To reach Diu by air you have to reach Mumbai or Ahmedabad. These two airports are connected from most of the countries all over the world.
How to Reach Diu from Mumbai and Ahmedabad
Nagoa is the airport in the union Territory of Diu which is connected to Mumbai by daily flights. Jet airways have regular flights flying to and from Diu into Mumbai. You will have to travel about 190 kilometers to reach Diu by Road from Mumbai.
By rail you have to reach Veraval the fishing port of Diu which is also the nearest railway station to reach Diu. This station is connected to ahmedabad Rajkot etc.
To reach Diu by Road you can travel through the National Highways which connect various cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Palitana, Daman and vadodara etc. The state transport also has well connected nerworkof buses which connect the nearby states.
To reach Diu from Ahmedabad you can take NH 8 which connects Daman with ahmedabad which is at about 367 kilometers and Vadodara at 300 kilometers.
