Whenever we are surfing on the internet or going through newspaper, we do encounter the word ERP. Every company is spending huge sum for their ERP management and one part they all need it quite badly. Those of you who are from IT know very well about ERP but still the common man is still unaware of the product. In this article i will be explaining the basic concept of ERP.
Enterprise Resource Planning(ERP) is defined as an integrated computer based system that contains all the information about internal and external resources including assets, human resources and financial resources of an organization. In short it contains all the information of an organization at a single place. The ERP system can be a centralized system or distributed across modular hardware.
ERP has its applications in almost all the fields of an organization whether it be manufacturing, human resources, access control, data services etc. Some of these are explained as follows:
1. Manufacturing Process: ERP can be employed in scheduling, cost management, manufacturing process, quality control. All the areas of manufacturing are covered by ERP.
2. Financial Services: ERP provides the facilities of cash management, accounting and asset management.
3. Human Resources: ERP is quite effective in managing human resource of an organization. ERP manages payroll, time and attendance, training and appraisals etc.
4. Access Control: ERP can be employed to control the access of employees and privileges for various processes.
One more thing ERP is like all other systems, it has its pros and cons. AT one end it integrates different functional areas, track performance and schedule of employee, centralize data at one location, security features and the other hand it has disadvantages like an ERP system is very costly, customization is limited, switching cost of ERP is very high, ERP imposes a resistance in transferring sensitive information between departments of an organization.
So in short like all the other applications ERP has both advantages and disadvantages so think once before buying one for your company.
