We all are familiar with this term.DNA is a type of nucleic acid.
Nucleic acid
These are colourless, complex compounds. In general a nucleic acid is made of 3 units which are
bases,sugar & phosphoric acid
.Here the bases are purines & pyrimidines.
DNA
There are two types of nucleic acids. They are
1. Deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA)
2. Ribonucleic acid(RNA)
What is DNA?
DNA or Deoxyribonucleic acid is a genetic material which is found in the nucleus. In living cells the synthesis of proteins takes place. The genetic messages that are encoded in the DNA contains instructions for the protein synthesis.
Organic bases in DNA
There are four bases in DNA. They are
1. Adenine
2. Guanine
3. Cytosine
4. Thymine
The pentose sugar present in DNA is deoxyribose
.
Structure of DNA
DNA is having a double helical structure. The pairing of bases is seen here. An important point is that adenine pairs with thymine & guanine pairs with cytosine.
