I think that every town has his soul and his face. When we look at the ordinary little towns we see ordinary faces. Some of them are sympathetic and attractive. Some are monotonous and boring. It was springtime when I came to Berlin for the first time. It was rainy day, there was no sun in the sky and I was not in the best mood. But this ancient city entranced me absolutely. It is impossible to talk about such great city in a couple of words. So, I shall speak only about my bellowed places and features of Berlin.
For better understanding of the soul of this city, my proposition is to look first of all at the Berlin’s surroundings. Ruppiner Land with the splendid castle Schloss Rheinsberg is situated in the north of Berlin. I was fascinated by the concerts and romantic settings of this place. The castle Neuhardenberg is situated in the east of Berlin. It is the example of the Baroque style. There are many cultural events take place here. Bertolt Brecht enjoyed this place very much during his summer trips. In the south of Berlin is situated the Dahme-Seengebiet area. If you want to have a real relaxation you must visit the well known spa Bad Saarow in this area. But if you are the sportsman and you like water, you must go to the west of Berlin and visit the Havelland area. The lake landscape of this area will satisfy the demands of amateurs and professionals.
Each one of Castles and Gardens of Berlin is worth a visit. Take for example only three of them. One of the best is Charlottenburg Palace and Park. It was built from 1695 to 1699 as a summer residence for Queen Sophie Charlotte, the wife of Frederick III. Sophia Charlotte died of pneumonia at the age of only 36. Her husband Frederick became the first „ King in Prussia“. This splendid palace amazes with its art collection and superbly decorated halls.
Sanssouci Palace was Frederick the Great's summer residence. It was built between 1745 and 1747. In 1744 was designed Sanssouci Park for the purpose of cultivation of plums, figs and wine on Potsdam’s doorstep. But, due to the exceptionally beautiful view, the king decided to build a large summer residence. The complex of Sanssouci Palace consists also of other small palaces such as New Chambers, the Orangery Palace, the Chinese House and the Charlottenhof Palace.
The New Garden & Cecilienhof Palace was built between 1914 and 1917 for Crown Prince William and his wife Cecilie von Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The palace is situated between lake Heiliger See, lake Jungfernsee and hill Pfingstberg. It was the place where the Potsdam Conference of the allied forces of the Second World War took place.
Looking at the architecture of Berlin we must say that great traditions meet with experimentation in this city. Sony Center, the work of the outstanding architect Helmut Jahn, was built in 2000. It is an excellent example of the futuristic type in the architecture.
And surely we can talk about Berlin as the city of museums. There are more than 170 museums here. All this museums offer to visitors everything from the ancient to the ultra-modern arts and culture. We can find three outstanding collections in the Pergamon museum: the Antiquity Collection, the Museum of the Near East and the Museum of Islamic Art. The most beautiful ancient woman Nefertiti waits for the visitors in the Altes Museum. But the cultural resources of Berlin have grown enormously in recent years. The Old National Gallery opened on December 2, 2001 the presentation of the collection of the 19th century art. The Heinrich-Zille-Museum in the Nikolaiviertel, the Max-Liebermann-Villa in Wannsee and the Mies van der Rohe-Villa in Berlin Hohenschönhausen began their work in 2002. The German Technical Museum also opened up a new large exhibition on December 2003; it is one of the world's largest technical museums. And it is planned to open in the near future a total of 27 new or completely renovated museums.
During the first and short trip to Berlin everyone should not miss well known places of the historical city centre. Unter den Linden, the pearl of Berlin, shows to visitors the most interesting historic building, like the Zeusghhaus, the National Opera, the Humbolt University and Brandenburg Gate. Only rare cities can brag of such mixture of modern and historic buildings which can be found on Friedrichstrasse Avenue.
In the end of the trip every guest of the city must visited one of the perfect restaurant of Berlin. And after that you will never forget this city.
