GEMMOLOGY
Do you have passion for gems? Then learn about them. It will tune you to a totally new profession. Gemology is the scientific study of gemstones. You learn how to identify gems, testing methods, cutting and polishing synthetically manufactured gems, grading and appraising
Related studies
Studies related to this field are gem cutting, sorting, grading, valuation and identification of gemstones, fashion, computer pattern designing, jewellery making, consultancy regarding stones, selling etc
As a Gemologist you will have to identify the gems and advise the jeweler about the compatibility of gems to particular metals. In jewellery, identification is the key element of business.
In India, gem trade is booming. The export volume of gems and jewellery is an upward trend and it is a thriving business now. Hence, people associated with the processing and trade should be trained to carry out the operations scientifically.
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates who have qualified 10+2 or equivalent from a recognized educational Institution can apply for degree/diploma/ certificate course in gemology
The minimum age required is 18 years. No upper age limit.
WHERE TO STUDY
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT, Delhi) offers a 3- year intensive diploma programme in accessory design that includes jewellery design.
Indian Institute of Gemology (IIG New Delhi) is offering various courses of Gemology
The Indian Diamonds Institute and the Indian Gemological Institute conduct advanced fellowship programmes of 1 year duration for science and engineering graduate
