Poultry farming in India is one of the small scale business and excellent source of income.

Poultry farming, on a small- scale, in small units, each unit with a few birds, usually numbering from 10- 25, is extensively practiced by small farmers in rural India, along with agriculture.

The birds are housed in small enclosures during night and are left in the open during day time. The investment for such units is rather low and the farming is not based on scientific techniques.

The faecal matters are excreta of fowls, which are indeed rich in nitrogen. This faecal matter is used as organic manure for agriculture. Such units are subsidiary sources of income to the farmers.

The Poultry farming plays an important role in the rural economy of India, and provides a regular and study source of income to the farmers.

Poultry farming has developed in to an industry in rural, semi rural and urban areas of India. In India large Poultry farms are managed on commercial lines, superior breeds of chicken are reared from both egg production and for meat. Broiler breeds are maintained for meat production.

In different parts of India, many units for the manufacture of poultry feed have also come into existence.
