The Govt. of Maharashtra has passed a Government Resolution stating that Private practice has been disallowed for Medical Teachers in Maharashtra.

The Govt. of Maharashtra has passed a Government Resolution dated 18th August 2010 stating that Private practice has been disallowed for Medical Teachers in Maharashtra.Doctors found breaking the rule will face disciplinary action, which may even be suspension.

Earlier in 2008 the Government had allowed private practice for Medical teachers attached to various medical , Dental and Ayurvedic colleges in Maharashtra, provided they had completed 3 yrs of service in government and had not opted for NPA (Non Practicing Allowance). The doctors were allowed to do private practice after their official working hours.Currently, the NPA is 35% of the basic salary.

The MSMTA( Maharashtra State Medical Teachers Association ) has opposed this step of Government raising the issue of the future of doctors who had already opted for private practice previously. The state government had cited the reason that very few teachers had opted for not recieving the NPA and hence the whole concept ceased to have any value.

On the contrary , Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr AFM Ruhal Haque has issued a statement that the National Health Policy 2010 would be finalised very soon and in the light of that, government physicians may be allowed private practice (Central government employees)!Such is the contrast in our country.

Now it remains to be seen as to what implications will this step of government will result in but it is sure to attract not many professionals in the field of teaching in Govt. medical colleges which are already deficient in teaching staff and these lacunae surface each time there is an MCI( Medical Council of India) inspection. Also this step of Government is going to do very little to prevent the exodus of well qualified staff from the Government services into private!
