Types of Silkworm

Silk filament is reeled from silkworm cocoons, there are different varieties in silkworm. Disease free silkworm varieties are produced from disease free seeds. Reproductive seeds are utilized for production of good seed cocoons, from which emerging moths are used for cross breeding so as to produce good hybrid seeds. Industrial seeds are meant for producing cocoons which yield silk.

C'Nichi Silkworm Variety

This is a multivoltine local silkworm race found in mysore area.

Pure Mysore silkworm Race

The variety Pure Mysore Race is also a multivoltine local race found in Karnataka.

Bivoltine Hybride Silkworm Race

Bivoltine Hybride Race is popularly called BVH, these hybrid variety of silkworm races are produced by crossing two bivoltine races like KA,NB4D2, NB7, NB18 ETC.

Nandi Silkworm Hybrids

Nandi Hybrids are produced by crossing females of multivoltine races and male of bivoltine races. Cocoons of hybrids of multivoltine and bivoltine races yield more silk and these hybrids are extensively used in Karnataka. Nandi hybrid seeds are supplied by Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute of Mysore.
