When it comes to studying, Jamie Boran knows how to do it.

Jamie's first six weeks of college were glorious. “I rushed a fraternity, I got involved in inter mural sports, and I'm embarrassed to say that I did a lot of partying.”

What he did n t do much of was studying.

“That sixth week I had my first paper due in English and I had a midterm in my Intro to Business class. I started working on the paper two hours before it was due and it wasn't worth the paper I typed it on. I didn't do any studying for the Business test and the questions could have been in Latvian for all I knew of them.”

After the disastrous midterm, he confided in his Fraternity big brother, Sean, that he was in real trouble and needed help studying.

“Sean was great about it. He lead me to on-campus resources that I didn't know about. Plus, he got me involved in the fraternity studying group for brothers on academic probation.”

One of the campus resources Sean lead him to was Dianne Switz er, an Academic Counselor who helps students with their studying skills.

“I told Jamie that he was way behind, but that the situation was salvageable,” she says.

Jamie hadn't been doing his Journal assignments in English, so he got permission from his instructor to do a morning and an evening journal to catch up.

And, since he hadn't cracked the Business textbooks, Switz er mapped out a day to day studying strategy to catch up.He knew that he would need to do especially well on the group project and the final to make up for the poor showing on the midterm.

In a way, this turned out to be a good thing because he took a leadership role in the group project to make sure it turned out well. “I don t think I would have stepped up to the plate if it hadn't been for the pressure,” Jamie says. “Now I know that I have got it in me to lead people.”

In the eighth week of the semester, he had his second midterm. It was in his Biology class.“Man, I really studied for that test,” Jamie says. But it wasn't enough.

“I was expecting a test like the ones I had in high school science. College is a whole nother ball game.”

He got a C- on the test. So Switz er suggested that he go to the professor s office and begin studying the test there. That way, he could see the pattern of the questions so he would be more prepared for the next one. When the bio professor saw how much effort he was putting in to the test, he offered to throw out the midterm and double the Final grade if the final was better.

He did pretty well in Speech and his Phys Ed class from the beginning. But mastering the studying techniques from the other classes put him in good standing for the semester grade. He had a 3.2 grade point average.

Now a Senior and president of his fraternity, he has made a point of helping his brothers approach studying smartly.

“Even if you are a few weeks into the semester, it s not too late to turn your grades around,” he says.He should know. He now has a 3.8 g.p.a.
