Summer Training in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology-2008
May 13 to June 14, 2008

SCOPE OF TRAINING :

A short-term practical training for the duration of about 5 weeks will be conducted at the Department of Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, New Delhi. This course aims to provide exposure to some of the modern experimental tools and protocols of Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology to the students of M. Sc. (Life Science / Biotechnology/Bioinformatics), B. Tech. (Chemical/ Biochemical Engineering). Expert faculty from Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Molecular Biology will be involved in conducting this training so as to cover various disciplines of Bioengineering and Biotechnology. The participants will be interacting with experts in their fields and will get acquainted with practical aspects of various modern techniques along with the underlying principles. Experiments will be conducted in small groups under the expert supervision where individual participants will follow experimental protocol designed in different areas. A few demonstration experiments will also be conducted. A few lectures related to practical will also be delivered. The training will be in two phases. Phase I of the training will be for about one week in which the candidates will be familiarized with the following techniques:

Ion Exchange chromatography/Gel Filtration
Gas Chromatography/ HPLC
Gel Electrophoresis for Protein & DNA Separation
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Enzyme Immobilization
Study of Fermenter Operation
Plate & Frame Filtration
Microfiltration/ Ultrafiltration
Cell Disruption/ Batch Centrifugation

In phase II the candidates will be allotted a project from the on-going projects of the department from any of the following major areas: Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Enzyme Technology, Fermentation Technology & Downstream Processing. In addition insilico projects in Bioinformatics will also be available. The project period would be about four weeks.

THE DURATION & THE PERIOD:

May 13 to June 14, 2008 (33 days)


FEES:

Rs 20,000/ (rupees twenty thousands only) per candidate excluding boarding and lodging. The boarding & lodging on campus can be provided to outstation candidates on request at a nominal rate of approximately Rs 150/- per day.


ELIGIBILITY:

Students of M. Sc final year in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Life sciences, Biotechnology & Bioinformatics or B.Tech. final year in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering & Biotechnology, or B.Pharma / M.Pharma final year or M. Tech in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology and Biotechnology are eligible to apply.


SELECTION CRITERIA:

A departmental committee will select the candidates. The selection criteria will be broad based such that the students from different regions of the country can be accommodated. The selected candidates will be informed by May 2, 2008 (no refund will be made for selected candidates) and the bank drafts of non-qualifying candidates (if any) will be returned by registered post.

IIT Delhi does not take any responsibility of medical casualties and accidents during the course of training. All the selected candidates are expected to have appropriate coverage of health and risk benefits.
