Memory can be defined as “ the power of retaining and recalling past experience.” Memory training, on the other hand, entails the use of a broad range of mental exercises to tackle deficits in memory so as to optimize its performance. A good memory is an indispensable asset in the discharge of the duties of an officer. An officer would be required to make observations and write reports in the course of his duties. An enhanced ability to recall places, dates, and circumstances and recognize persons or groups is imperative for an officer.

Several tests have been developed for the study of memory. In one of these tests, an individual might be shown some pictures and then asked to identify them from other pictures not previously seen. This ability is known as visual recognition memory. Verbal recall tests the ability of an individual to repeat a list of word read out to them. Research has shown that individuals can on average recall only seven words or other types of information such as a number. In addition, it is easier to recall the first and last few items. An insight into memory has been gained by studying people with brain disorders. Brain imaging has equally proved useful in the study of memory. This procedure helps to a real image of the location of memory in the brain. Imaging techniques include the use of computer-aided Tomography (CAT or CT) scans, Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FMRI) and Position Emission Tomography (PET).
The processes of memory have been divided into three:

Encoding – Getting the memories in

Storage – Keeping memories.

Retrieval – Getting the memories out again.

The processes take place in the brain. Different kinds of information are received by the brain and stored in different locations:

. Processing of working of short-term memory probably takes place in the front part of the brain.

. Learning or the process of storing new memories, takes place in the temporal lobes on the sides of the brain.

. Memories are probably stored in the big outer part of the brain known as the CORTEX.

. Information taken in through our eyes is processed by the back area of the brain known as the OCCIPITAL LOBE.

. Different sound forms are processed by the TEMPORAL LOBES on the sides of the brain.

. Information about the orientation of objects in space is processed by the PARIETAL LOBE, which occupies the top part of the brain.

. Memories dealing with emotion, language and habits are equally processed in specific areas.

. Verbal memory is more closely involved with the left side of the brain, while the right side is involved with visual memory.

Memory Improvement Techniques
Memory has to be worked if improvement is desired. To maximize the memory, an individual has to pay better attention, plan and organize properly. There are two main types of strategy:

(i). Inner or internal strategy which help the individual to lay down stronger memories so that information can be brought back into mind more easily. An example is the use of mnemonics – a technique of assisting the memory by using formulae to remember things.

(ii). Outer or external strategies and physical aids such as lists and diaries.

This is just a summary of memory training you can search the web for more comprehensive materials on memory training.
