Hello today I am going to teach you how to add, subtract(minus),multiply and divide involving negative and positive numbers. A lot of student around the ages 11-13 get trouble with negative numbers and I am here to help you. First let us learn a basic rule. The product of ‘like signs’ result in a plus and the product of ‘unlike signs’ result in a minus. Now what do i mean by this?? Simple……‘liked signs’ (-) x (-) = (+) and (+) x (+) = (+)………(a negative number multiplied by a negative number gives you a positive number and a positive number multiplied by a positive number also gives you a positive number) and for ‘unlike signs’ (-) x (+) = (-) and (+) x (-) = (-)……….(a negative number multiplied by a positive number gives you a negative number and a positive number multiplied by a negative number also gives you a positive number)

e.g. (-4) + (-4)…………note that +(-4) means (+1) x (-4), therefore gives a result of (-4)
Therefore (-4) + (-4) = -4 -4 = -8
This was an example of ‘unlike signs’, now let us look at ‘like signs’.
e.g. (-5) - (-3)…………note that -(-3) means (-1) x (-3), therefore gives a result of (+3)
Therefore (-5) - (-3) = -5 + 3 = -2

Now let us look how to multiply negative numbers, it is the same process as above.
e.g. (-3) x (+4)……..a negative number multiplied by a positive number gives a result to a negative number
Therefore (-3) x (+4) = -12 …….note that (+4) x (-3) gives the same answer.
e.g. (-3) x (-3)……..a negative number multiplied by a negative number gives a result to a positive number

Now let us look at how to divide negative numbers, it is the same process as multiplying.
e.g. (-18) / (-2)……a negative number divided by a negative number gives a result to a positive number.
Therefore (-18) / (-2) = 9
e.g. (-33) / (11)…..a negative number divided by a positive number gives a result to a negative number.
Therefore (-33) / (11) = -3 …….note that (33) / (-11) gives the same answer.

I hope you all understand how to do questions involving negative numbers now!!
