While I appreciate the author for raising this article and honoring some of the best musicians of this great country, how come the contributions of some of the legends in Film Industries can be forgotten. For example Ilayaraaja , the famous music composer of South Indian cinema has created a fusion music along with Western composers and even created a record in foreign countries. Likewise the present era craze A R Rehman has scored many good music for some International films and events and he was duly recognized for that. So music has been the back bone of this country which brought laurel and fame for both the composer and the country.
People may not know or rather very few people know about Annapoorna Devi who was a Surbahar (Bass Sitar) player of Hindustani classical music. She is the daughter of Allauddin Khan who founded the Maihar Gharana. Her actual name was Roshanara Khan and was a disciple of her Father where Pt. Ravi Shankar used to come and learn the Hindustani classical music from her father. She married Pt Ravi Shankar and converted herself to Hinduism. Later they divorced and lived their life separately. Her story is too important that I can't finish it in few paragraphs. But in short, I would like to provide all details. She used to perform with Pt. Ravi Shankar on live shows but it is said that Ravi Shankar started feeling insecure because she used to get more applause from the audience than Ravi Shankar. Later she decided not to perform.
The movie "Abhiman" in which Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan acted is based on their life story. She got the India's third highest civilian award, Padma Bhusan, in 1977. She stayed away from the limelight of media but continues to be thought of as a musician of highest caliber in Hindustani classical music.
