So you thought maintaining a bike is an easy job because you have read all those ‘How to look after your bike’ books and heard all the jargon that techies routinely dole out on what to do and what not to do when it comes to motorcycle maintenance.
But when it comes to thumb rules, no one knows things better than the men who sell the bikes, right? We thought so too. Be a Zen master! AutoMania spoke to a cross section of bike marketers to come up with a list of must-dos that you can’t ignore even if you aren’t aspiring to be a Zen master specialising in the art of motorcycle maintenance.
Read on and remember these seven habits of highly effective bikers. Care's always better! First things first, care is better than cure. Nearly everyone we spoke to pointed out to the very basic need of a bike-it should get proper service on time. ”The most important thing is to get into preventive maintenance rather than breakdown maintenance,” says P S Sunder, marketing head, Hero Honda.
“There is no point in waiting for a time when your bike is about to fall apart and then to go to the service centre for a maintenance check,” he adds. No garage, no mechanic, no worry! But getting your motorcycle serviced is just one part of the story. “Servicing is not just the most important thing but getting it serviced from an authorised service centre is even more important. Most bikers make this simple mistake of handing over their precious bike to any garage and mechanic which is not right,” adds Sunder.
Reason: like cars, bike technology is evolving very fast and the current crop have car like combustion chambers which are too complicated for a ‘denting-painting’ job.
That’s why, proximity to a service centre is crucial. “When you buy a bike make sure you spot the nearest service centre so that when you need to get it serviced you can easily go there,” says Sunder. Here's to happy driving! Others like Atul Gupta, associate vice-president (marketing & sales), Yamaha list a couple of basic checks that are crucial for your bike’s well-being. “Take care of your headlights, bike oil, tyre pressure whenever you are going on a long biking trip and of course your helmet is very important,” says Gupta.
Adding that there’s no way you can expect your motorcycle to perform well without timely service. Where's the helmet? While all bike marketers agree servicing and carrying a helmet are the two musts on any biker’s priority list, what’s just as important, they feel, is self-education about how the motorcycle works.
“It can be quite useful to know how your bike functions and know how to do small things like changing the oil to save yourself that frequent trip to the service centre,” says Sunder. Cool price dude Of course some marketers like Bajaj Auto marketing head S Sridhar feel that all motorcycle enthusiasts should be on the look out for feature bargains. With the competition getting cut-throat, the bike market will have more add-ons slapped on than ever before.
And a bike lover can get a loaded model at a very competitive price. “Be on the lookout for better features at good prices,” says Sridhar.
In other words look for cool deals and hot technology and be ready for change as the bike industry in India gets more and more cutting edge. No bargaining! Of course bargains are no good if maintenance becomes cumbersome.
Like Sunder, Sridhar too agrees on that basic principal: “Always buy a brand whose authorised service centre is in proximity to you because you wouldn’t make a long trip to the service station every time in the long run,” he says.
