Tsunami Devastates Japan
It is 9.25 PM here at Trivandrum, Kerala, and the state at the southern periphery of India. Unlike other Indian metro cities, the roads are comparatively desolated, quiet and calm at this hour of night, except for the bustle of shopkeepers and people who are preparing to shut down the shops and head home for a night of peaceful and calm sleep. Yet, thousands of miles away, in Japan, known by the world as the most technologically developed nation, the nature is soaring her anger and devastation on the human race in the form of a disaster that leaves man in profound wonder : the Tsunami.
Media reports say that the Tsunami that hit Japan today, on 11th March 2011, is the immediate aftereffect of a gigantic earthquake. An earthquake that has occurred once in 100 years of Japan's history. The tsunami hit the coasts of north-eastern Japan by mid-day and spread to most of Japan's major cities putting into risk, the lives and property of thousands of hardworking Japanese citizens. The earthquake that measured 8.9 on the Richter scale is reported to have taken the lives of almost 300 people at the city of Sendai, which is the epicenter of the quake. The quakes led to the formation of 33-foot high tidal waves that leashed upon the city. The television videos of the high waves rising up into cities that prospered with skyscrapers and buildings till yesterday are quite shocking.
This is not the first time that a country like Japan is being affected by earthquakes and Tsunami. The technology and development of Japan has been so adjusted that it can withstand the extremities of natural disasters. Even then, this massive earthquake has once again succeeded in shattering the social, cultural and economic sectors of Japan. Doesn't this really explain man's helplessness at the overpowering force of the nature?
Another issue that is being telecasted at this hour by the media is the break out of huge fires at Japan's biggest nuclear power plant- the Onagawa power plants. Fire that has broke out pose the threat of leakage of nuclear radiations that could lead to even terrible conditions. The fire, as a TV channel reports, is spreading along the Pacific belt. So, here we have a situation when nature's anger is associating with our own, human-made resources and turning towards ourselves. The efforts, hard work and the lives of a generation of people are at stake. Today, thousands of people across the globe sympathize for the plight of the people of Japan. Thousands watch with anxiety the struggle of Japan. Thousands strive to survive from quakes, tsunamis and fire. Thousands pray to spare their lives. And the thousands that survived the nature's anger thank god for sparing their lives. The news channels say that 19 more countries along the pacific coast are at risk of approaching Tsunami. We can do nothing but hope and pray for the lives of the innocent. It is now that it dawns upon us that the pain of the earth has seen its limit. Now, it's the nature's turn to express her anger and pain. When the wise said that the earth can hold no more, we kept loading it with even higher sky scrapers. Now, we have no choice other than to bear what it gives us.
While the death toll increases hour after hour, and the number of missing is alarmingly on an increase, let us regret for having neglected the cries of the earth. Let us pray silently to Mother Nature to spare the rest of our human-brothers from her anger. Let us promise to ourselves that as responsible children of Mother Nature, we shall protect her and love her. Because a mother can never neglect her child's prayers. Moreover, because this is all that we can do at this point of time.
