Advanced Ceramic Processing & Characterization
1st to 4th Jul 2008

OBJECTIVES :

Within the last few years, new concepts have emerged regarding improved processing by controlling particle packing, modifying powder flow characteristics and optimization of processing through tailoring particle morphology and characteristics. The concept of colloidal processing helps to eliminate much of the processing inhomogeneities which in turn increases the processing reliability and property reproducibility of the ceramic products. Detailed characterization of the powder characteristics and /or precursors are very much essential for exploit the advantages of advanced powder processing. A few important powder characterizations are: decomposition and crystallization behaviour of as prepared powders, phase evolution and phase analysis study, porosity and pore size determination, surface area, particle and densification behaviour of powders, microstructural characterization etc. The course basically aims to discuss the basic principles of different characterization techniques with relevance to advanced ceramic processing, the data acquisition and analysis and the application in industry and research. Case studies from the industry as well as research institutes will also be discussed to elaborate the usefulness of the techniques.

COURSE OUTLINE :

Colloidal processing of ceramics
Particle packing, consistency, particle mechanics & rheology, colloidal processing

Thermal analysis and dilatometry
DTA/TG, DSC, dilatometer, data acquisition and analysis, specific case study from industry

X-ray diffraction and Rietveld analysis
Principles, data acquisition and result analysis, Rietveld analysis and its scope in industry

Surface area, porosity and particle size
Type of adsorption, BET surface area, Mercury intrusion, porosity, pore size and shape

Microstructure and microscopy
Microstructural features, basic principles of scanning electron microscope, microstructure and analysis

ACCOMMODATION :

A limited number of rooms with shared accommodation are available in the visitors’ house/guest house of NIT, Rourkela at a very reasonable charge. A good number of hotels are also available in the city with the tariff ranging from Rs. 400 to Rs. 2500 per day. Confirmed accommodation for the delegates/participants can be arranged by the organizing committee either in the NIT campus and/or in the hotels on specific request accompanied with demand draft.

ELIGIBILITY AND APPLICATION PROCEDURE :

The basic qualification for attending such a course is B.Tech. However people with science background having industrial experience can apply. This course is primarily intended to impart fundamental principles of ceramic processing, origin of particle charge and colloidal processing, processing related defects in green bodies, and ceramic characterization techniques like DSC/TG, BET Surface Area Analyzer, Dilatometer, Porosimeter, Paticle size Analyzer, Zeta Meter etc. Specific case study from application view point will also be discussed. The course fee per person is Rs.8000/- (for industries and R& D organizations) and Rs. 5000/- for academic institutes.

The seats for the course is limited to 30 and is on first cum first serve basis. The Registration form (format attached) along with the course fee in shape of a bank draft is to be drawn in favor of “Continuing Education, NIT, Rourkela” payable at SBI, NIT Branch, Rourkela (code-2109) and must reach on or before 20th June 2008.
