How to become a Teacher? Teaching is the noblest of all jobs and the job of a teacher is the most respected job. Because teachers have the responsibility to shape the future of young generation, motivate them and guide them in the right way to achieve their goals in life. But to become a teacher is not an easy task. Moreover, the challenge that are involved in the Teaching jobs and the pay-package that is relatively lesser than the private sector are working as catalyst distract brilliant people away from the job.
Teahing jobs scenario in India Studies and statistics show that the country needs trained teachers. Teaching positions are vacant in many institutions as a result of which the students are suffering loss. But factors like lack of trained teachers, state govt's unwillingness to appoint new teachers in vacant positions etc are affecting Teacher job scenario.
National Council for Teacher Education(NCTE) a statutory body of govt of India has now initiated new rules for recruitment of High school level teachers. Earlier a simple graduate degree was consdidered sufficient to be a teacher in Highschool level. And a plus two pass out could teach in primary level students. But now reputed private schools and Govt schools have make it mundatory to consider only trained teacher for various level of tecahing. Like for Post Graduate Teachers(PGT)in Higher secondary level and Trained Graduate Teacher(TGT) a B.Ed degree is must, for a Trained Primary Teacher post(PRT) a Montessory training certificate is a must now. Besides these two trainings, now NCTE has initiated a new criteria for teachers which is called TET. Everyone aspiring to be a teacher in lower highschool level(especially) should pass Teacher Eligibilty Test(TET). As this exam is conduced by the state, the test is also called State-level teacher Eligibility Test(STET). It is a competitive exam and passing is once does not ensure that the certificate will be valid for a life-time.
Eligibility for TET or STET B.Ed is a must to appear in the TET or STET. But the notable point is that the validity of the qualifying certificate B.Ed that is B.Ed will be decided by the State Govt/Union Territory govt or Central Govt organization. The certificate cannot be more than 7 years old.
Exam pattern of TET/STET The exam pattern of TET/STET is much similar to any competitive exam. You will get 2 papers with objective multiple choice questions and in each paper there will be 150 questions. These questions are supposed to be different for different level of teaching. Here is an outline of question paper and their intended levels.
- Paper I: For candidates who want to become teachers for classes I-V.
- Paper II: For those want to teach students of VI to VIII.
- Paper I and II: Candidates aspiring to teach classes from I to VIII will have to appear and qualify in both the papers I and II.
Syllabus for the TET/ STET The syllabus for TET or STET covers 5 subjects or sections for paper I. You have to answer 30 objective type multiple questions in each section or each subject. And each of the questions will carry 1 mark each.
The duration of each paper in TET exam is one and a half hours.
Here are the papers subject-wise for TET/STET 1. Child development and pedagogy 2. Language I (the medium of instruction) 3. Language II (chosen from a list other than language I) 4. Mathematics 5. Environmental studies
Description of Question Paper of TET / STET
- Child development and pedagogy: Here the questions will focuss on educational psychology of teaching profession. This will measure the person's understanding of the characteristics as well needs of students of different learning groups.
- Language I and II questions will be based on language proficiency, elements of language, communication and comprehension abilities of the candidate.
- Questions for Mathematics paper for TET will focus on concepts and problem solving abilities of the candidate.
- Environmental studies paper for TET will concentrate on the enviornmental awareness and knowlege of the candidate.
- There will be 3 compulsory sections in Paper II on child development and pedagogy, language I and II.
- For Mathematics and Science teachers in TET there will be 60 Multiple Choice questions of one mark each.
- For Social studies teachers(SST) candidate there will be 60 Multiple Choice questions carrying 1(one) mark each.
How to qualify TET To qualify Teacher eligibility test(TET), one needs to prepare according to the syllabus. Like any other competitive exam here to one must practise finishing their question paper withing the given time-frame. Basically preparing own suject thoroughly is a must and practising multiple choice questions will help to qualify this exam.

Hello Omkar,
This is my pleasure that my article has helped you.
Coming to the point, to become a teacher you must qualify the TET/STET. But it is not clearly stated in the official website of NCTE that you should possess B.Ed degree. But as B.Ed is a must for teaching in high School level so if is by default mundatory to have it before applying for any school or TET for that matter.
But now having a B.Ed degree is not enough, you have to qualify the TET also. All the teachers who are working presently should pass the TET exam.
Reagrds, Runa Borah.

@Rajeev Chauhan,
In general 'Graduation with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in 1-year Bachelor in Education (B.Ed)' is the general criteria for appearing TET/CTET. There are different kind of eligibility criteria for different level of TET like Elementary level, Primary stage etc.
In case of relaxation as far as I know there are different rules as per different boards. Mostly for OBC/ST/SC only age relaxation is provided.

Hi,
I wanted to ask if there is a paper for PGT teachers as well (for teaching 11th and 12th). As you mentioned the papers I and II are for class I to VIII, what about higher classes? Is there a separate paper or are those teachers not required to give CTET at all?
Regards, Farheen

Dear Faheen Khan, For teaching in 11th and 12th CTET/TET is not required as of now. TET/CTET official website has cited eligibilty criteria for two stages only Classes I-V as first stage and VI-VIII as second stage. So you do not need to appear for TET for teaching in 11th and 12 classes.
