Chewing Betal Leaves with areca nuts and some spices like cardamoms, nutmeg, rose petals, gulkand, etc, is a favorite of pan lovers in India. Giving betal leaves during traditional ceremonies is a part of India's culture. Betal leaves are also used as home remedy for may diseases.

In India betal leaves are available throughout the year and the cultivation of betal leaves are done across the country.
Betal leaf (Pan ) is mostly taken after food, which not only acts as a mouth refresher but also helps in digesting food.
Betal leaf's juice has a herbal aroma which stimulates when chewed with betal nuts give refreshing effect. Mostly some spices like cardamoms, nutmeg,rose petals, gulkand, etc, chunna (highly rich calcium content).are added to it to enrich the flavor of the Betal leaves. Betal leaves when chewed removes anorexia and increases appetite, and also it removes acidity .
Betal leaves also has antiseptic effect and is good for the lungs and improve respiratory system.
Betal leaves' juice is poured in the ears to relieve earache.
To treat the boils/abscesses, betal leaves are heated and put it over the area to remove the puss formation and inflammation.
Too much of chewing betal leaves will lead to tooth decay and when it is chewed with tobacco, will lead to oral cancer over a period of time.
Children and pregnant women should avoid chewing Pan.

Really the usage of betal leaf is good for stomach and it has many medicinal values. Only demerit is the mark in the teeth on continuous usage. Using pan,gutka etc., are very dangerous and the users of such things can correct them from such habit by simply using the betals.
