History of Phagwara
Phagwara city is in Kapurthala district of Punjab in India. Phagwara is now well known as a Manchester of Punjab. Phagwara belongs to Doaba region of Punjab located between two famous rivers of Punjab, viz. Sutlej and Beas. Punjab means five waters (rivers) since Punjab had five rivers before partition of India. Doab means two waters (rivers). Now image of Phagwara is set on map of all over world. A city discovered by Mugal King Shahjahan on 1627 between 1658. Phagwara is situated on National Highway (NH) No.1 between Ludhiana and Jalandhar. The new bye-pass constructed over the north periphery of the town directly links Jalandhar city to Chandigarh via Banga, Nawashahar and Ropar. One can reach Mohali or Chandigarh from Phagwara within three hours. It is one of the important railway junctions located on the main railway line from Delhi to Amritsar. The trains coming from Delhi and beyond all pass through Phagwara on their way either to Amritsar in the far west and to Jammu in the north of Phagwara.

Phagwara is the main industrial centre in Kapurthala district because of its good location on the national highway and a hinterland which produces crops like sugarcane, cotton and maize. For this reason Phagwara city is endowed with the famous cotton textiles industry known as Jagatjit cotton Textile Mills or JCT Mills. It has an age old Jagatjit Sugar Mill and a Starch Mill. All these are located on NH1. Phagwara city has thousands of small scale industry spread all over the ciy which produce auto parts, diesel engine parts, machine tools, agricultural implements etc. It is a granary store of Punjab. The agricultural produce is one of the richest around the city not only in Punjab but also in India. The vegetables produced around Phagwara go to all over Punjab. The yield per acre of rice and and wheat is one of the highest in the country because of the fertile land around the city and the hardworking nature of the farmers in this region. It is one of the richest region in Punjab as far as per capita income of the people is concerned. The raw fresh sugar produced from the sugarcane in this area is one of the tastiest in Punjab.

For the education it is one of the hubs of Doaba area. Phagwara is the home town of maternal uncle of the legendary Dharmendra. Many famous footballers of India belong to Phagwara. JCT mills Phagwara's football team is one of the top football teams of India. Phagwara is surrounded by near about hundred villages making it a town lying amidst the green gardens around. Phagwara is also very famous for its best and cheap sweets made from milk since milk is available in abundance in the rural areas around Phagwara.

Every day about ten thousand passengers are travel from Phagwara railway station. The historical Sikh gurudwara of Sukhchainana (the house of peace) is located on the outskirts of Phagwara. If one wants to see lush green fields in any season, one needs to just go out of the four walls of the city and enjoy the greenery all round. The hospitable farmers will be ever willing to greet you. Haveli, the heritage restaurant famous all over the region is located only about 8 kms from Phagwara where one enjoy the old and new delicacies alike.
