Operating systems and its types

This article briefly classifies the different types of operating systems and its versions. This also explains the wide range of the Microsoft windows operating system which are widely / commonly used by the IT people.

Operating system is a software which acts as an interface between the computer hardware and the application software. Operating systems are available in both 32-bit and 64-bit. We can use any one of the operating system types depending upon the computer hardware and its capability.

Types of Operating System:

Multi-User OS

Multi-tasking OS

Distributed OS

There are many operating systems available in the market such as Microsoft Windows, DOS, Mac OS, Linux and UNIX. Let us now see the various versions of these operating systems

Windows 2000

2. Windows XP Home Edition
3. Windows XP Professional
4. Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
5. Windows XP Media Center Edition

Windows Server 2003 – The types are
1. Standard Edition
2. Enterprise Edition
3. Datacenter Edition
4. Web Edition

Windows Vista – The types are
1. Windows Vista Starter
2. Windows Vista Home Basic
3. Windows Vista Home Premium
4. Windows Vista Business
5. Windows Vista Enterprise
6. Windows Vista Ultimate

Windows Server 2008 R2 – The types are
1. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition
2. Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition
3. Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Edition

Windows 7 – The types are
1. Windows 7 Starter
2. Windows 7 Home Basic
3. Windows 7 Home Premium
4. Windows 7 Enterprise

Mac OS:
The Mac operating system is classified into two types and they are

Mac OS classic

Mac OS X

Linux OS:

RedHat Linux

Turbo Linux

Vine Linux

Plamo Linux

Microsoft and RedHat have various certifications to excel in their operating systems Windows and Linux respectively. These certifications can be done though online exams and once we complete the exams, the results will be announced and the certificates will be available in their sites. We can login to their websites using the credentials which we used for the certification exams, can be used for getting the certificates.
