Tornadoes and Cyclones
Posted Date: 11-Apr-2011
This article deals with meaning, characteristics and types of tornadoes. It also deals with their detection and safety measures required to be taken agains them.
The word Tornado is derived from Spanish word Tornada meaning Thunderstorm. Later, with the time it is converted into Tornado. The general meaning of Tornado is "A Twister". It is used as synonym for the word Cyclone. Tornadoes and cyclones are inter related.
A cyclone is a Rotating storm that can be hundreds of kilometers wide in a water bed. These storms can be very destructive. The winds in a cyclone usually blow at more than 120 kilometers per hour. It looks like a huge spinning doughnut of clouds. These strong ocean waves when hits the land they cause damage in the form of huge winds circulating with contact of the ground. These are generally known as Tornadoes.
Characteristics of Tornadoes:
Tornadoes are obscured completely with rain and dust. They may appear in various shapes and sizes. Some are associated with very much less speeds such as 40mph. These tornadoes are common in the open land near the seashore. In United Nations tornadoes are around 500 feet (150 m) across on average and stay on the ground for 5 miles.
Generally cyclones rotate in cyclonically i.e., in anti clock-wise sense but one in hundred rotate in Clock-wise sense.
An eye is the centre part of the storm. The quietest part of a cyclone is the eye, where there are no winds or clouds.
Agitation of Cyclones and Tornadoes:
Most cyclones start over Tropical oceans because areas of warm waters are their sources of energy. Similarly tornadoes start for different reasons and are not so danger than a cyclone. But a Tornado also has very strong winds, so it can be too destructive. It can lift a 500ft feet light house within seconds, Tornadoes do not stay longer when compared to Cyclones.
Different names of cyclone:
When a cyclone starts in the warmer waters of the Atlantic Ocean, it is called a "Hurricane". In the west Pacific Ocean, it is known as "Typhoon."
Types of Tornadoes:
It consists of the attack of multiple tornadoes at a same region. .
It is tornado over water.
It is the general tornado which is seen on the land regions.
It's a gust front tornado. There is no link with the cloud and the ground.
These can be observed dust or hot days especially in the land of desert.
Fire whirls :
These are fire tornadoes. The heat created by the volcanic eruptions cause these fire whirls.
Many attempts are made to warn of tornadoes. Before the 1950s, the only method of detecting a tornado was by someone seeing it on the ground. Often, news of a tornado would reach a local weather office after the storm.
But now meteorologists use the convection of Radar system, with the help of these modern technology the warning of a tornado attack is spread all over the world within seconds.
But the best way for scientists to learn a cyclone's size and strength is to fly a plane through it. It is the surest method but not the safest method.
In the United Nations of America as tornado attack is frequent, the houses near the shore built by a low density wood and they construct an underground level for making their lives save from these dreadful attack. As tornadoes blow only on surfaces the people in the underground remain safe.
