NNRMS (ISRO) Sponsored
Short Term Course on Remote Sensing and GIS For Teachers of Colleges / Universities
Organized by Continuing Education Programme (CEP) Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in the Department of Geology & Geophysics Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
Announcement :
Department of Geology & Geophysics has pleasure to conduct a series of NNRMS (ISRO) sponsored short term courses on ' Remote Sensing and GIS' during the periods February 18 - 29, 2008; May 5 - 16, 2008 and May 19 - 30, 2008.
Introduction :
The twin techniques of Remote Sensing and GIS have been widely accepted as the most versatile decision making tools in all types of geospatial activities. Integrated application of these two techniques have been universally used in harnessing the natural resources with incredible speed and reasonable accuracy, even from inaccessible areas, to help the process of planning the integrated development of a region. They are widely used in planning, management and monitoring diverse fields of activities, such as, infrastructure development, rural and urban planning, environmental monitoring, resource inventory disaster management, sustainable development, etc. Remotely sensed data, acquired from airborne and space borne platforms, combined with collateral data form the basic database in GIS for multi-criteria decision making in several applications, viz., groundwater and mineral exploration, land use / land cover, forestry, wasteland management, inland water resources, mining, agriculture, coastal mapping and development, land records, health care, socio-economic, crime investigation etc.
The main objective of this course is not only to enhance the knowledge of participants in the field of Remote Sensing and GIS but also to motivate them to take up research in this rapidly growing field of science and technology. Course Content
Basic concepts of Remote sensing; optical, thermal and microwave remote sensing; data acquisition; aircrafts and satellites; visual and digital methods of analysis and interpretation of remote sensing data; case studies of various applications of remote sensing.
Basic GIS concepts; spatial data models; data structures; database creation and manipulation; map analysis; geo-statistical analysis; 3D GIS; project planning; Basic concepts of GPS.
Resource Persons :
Faculty from IIT Kharagpur and experts from other premier Institution/ Organization will deliver Lectures followed by interactive sessions on the subject matter. Practical demonstration with extensive laboratory classes will be held.
Eligibility :
Course is exclusively for Teachers of approved Colleges / Institutions / Universities interested in the fields of Remote Sensing and GIS. Interested persons are requested to give their choice of the Course period in the Registration Form. However, in view of the limited seats, selection will be made on first come first serve basis. Teachers who have participated in such Course earlier elsewhere are not allowed for this Course. Since it is an Introductory Course, Teachers with experience in these techniques should not apply.
