Brushing is needed just to remove any food residue sticking between gums space. The paste is needed to make the brush move smoothly . The real use of the tooth paste whether herbal or chemical is give a pleasant taste for the brushing as a whole and to keep the mouth odourless or with pleasant smell. More tha that the tooth paste needs to be gently massaged over gums to make the gums tone and strength which will go a long way in preventing many common dental issues.

The tooth powder we use during my childhood was charred rice husk, finely powdered and added with similarly finely powdered common salt and a very little bit of pepper powder. These used to be filtered with a fine cloth and stored for use. Sometimes a very minute quantity of clove powder is also dded.

This used to give the needed abrasion in place of a brush and also used to keep mouth fresh and gums pain free.
