INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT CALCUTTA

Managerial Emotional Intelligence
Dec 08 – 12, 2008

Programme Director: Prof. Sujoya Basu

Programme Details

Objectives:
In this information age, when accessibility to information or technology is slowly losing its advantage as a source of sustainable long-term advantage, what differentiates one organization from another? It is said that the culture of the organization does. Organizational managers’ managerial style, awareness and self-management make a critical difference in building & sustaining an organization’s culture. In other words, the emotional intelligence of the manager makes a critical difference. The cognitively intelligent, but emotionally deficient manager generates interpersonal problems, which cascade down the hierarchy to adversely affect organizational effectiveness.
Emotional intelligence has been researched the world over (Mayer & Salovey, Bar-On, Goleman) as something which provides a significant edge over and above conventional intelligence. It is said that a substantial percentage of leadership effectiveness can be attributed to competencies arising out of emotional intelligence. The good news about EI is that contrary to the traditional view of intelligence, emotional intelligence can be learnt and developed over time.

The broad objective of this programme is an endeavor to help managers develop themselves as complete individuals…to get in touch with their selves, to manage their selves, to manage others and start developing not only as effective managers but also as model organizational citizens.

The specific objectives are:
• Understanding Self: understanding one’s emotional quotient, understanding one’s interpersonal styles, etc.
• Managing Self: managing one’s emotions, managing stress, managing the relationship between emotion, thought and behavior while factoring in the Indian ethos in managing emotions
• Interpersonal awareness: understanding how communication helps or hinders work processes, understanding team dynamics and how emotions harmonize or disrupt processes, understanding the impact of the emotionally intelligent leader
• Interpersonal management: learn about influencing styles, intelligent persuasion, to motivate others and to manage conflict.

Pedagogy:

Different instructors will bring expertise from different areas to make this learning experience unique. Instructors will act more as facilitators in helping participants through the process of learning, using a wide variety of pedagogy like lectures, discussions, case studies, and experiential exercises.
This programme will primarily utilize experience-based learning method. In the classroom, participants will interact with the facilitator to discover something about themselves -- their strengths, their styles, their interpersonal relationships, their participation in the group, how they are perceived by others etc. In the classroom, learning will take place mainly through experience-sharing, reflections, and discussion, apart from lectures. The participants are encouraged to express themselves and increase their personal and interpersonal effectiveness in a group setting. The overall learning will therefore depend on active participation from participants, especially in sharing of experiences & learnings everyday.
