Need for careful and proper use of vitamin tablets
Vitamin tablets are used by many without analysis and prescription from a doctor. This often leads to a negative impact on health. Why are vitamin-tablets used?
Vitamin tablets are often asked by patients for prescription from doctors. Many parents compel the doctors to prescribe vitamin tablets for successful performance of their child in his/her examinations, improvement of child's memory-power and so on. People even buy vitamin tablets to get rid of their own fatigue and tiredness. Apart from these, sportsmen too prefer to consume vitamin tablets before their sports events to ensure greater stamina. Is this unlimited use of vitamin tablets for good?
Most of us believe that vitamin tablets are all-ailment curing medicines or magic pills which render strength and health. This is not true. Vitamin tablets can in no way stand as substitutes to a healthy and nutritious diet and proper lifestyle. An ordinary man who follows a regular and healthy food-habit receives the minerals and vitamins necessary for the body from his food itself. But for people who lacks health and for pregnant women who need ample vitamins, external sources of vitamins, or vitamin-tables are essential.
Different kinds of vitamins
Vitamins have been classified basically into two kinds:
Fat-soluble vitamins are those vitamins which are stored in the body for a long period of time. Vitamins A, E, D and K belong to this category of vitamins.
Water-soluble vitamins are not usually stored in the body for long periods of time. Such vitamins are necessary for various activities of the body. The vitamins which belong to the B-complex group and vitamin C belong to the category of water-soluble vitamins.
Proper use of vitamin tablets
Vitamin tablets are not fit for use by anybody at any point of time in life. Vitamin tablets should be taken only at the prescription of a doctor and should not be used to substitute a nutritious diet. Described below are the proper methods of intake of vitamin tablets:
1.For the aged:
As the age increases, the body needs more vitamins and minerals to function actively. Hence, the lack of one or more kinds of vitamins leads to various health disorders and deficiency diseases. Hence, much more than a healthy, young person, an aged person requires the use of vitamin tablets. Further, for people who are affected with diseases like diabetes and cholesterol, vitamin tablets are often prescribed by the doctors.
There are certain vitamins which women require more than men, for health and wellness. During pregnancy, after childbirth, post-menopause etc are several situations when women need to take vitamin tablets. Even then, women should start using vitamin tablets only after consulting a doctor.
During pregnancy, women need more of vitamins which belong to the B-complex group. Folic acid is one such vitamin which is of the B-complex group and which is demanded greatly by a woman's body during pregnancy. Folic acid is extremely essential for the proper and timely development of the child's brain and circulatory system. If folic acid is not present in the mother's body in adequate amounts, the child can be affected greatly with disorders in brain and nerves.
Folic acid is present in ample amounts in milk, eggs, meat, leafy vegetables and other vegetables. But a large amount of this vitamin is lost due to over-cooking of food, especially vegetables. For people whose bodies lack folic acid, doctors prescribe the tablets of folic acid which normally does not produce any side-effects in the body.
4.Use of Vitamin-D tablets:
In women, especially after menopause, vitamin-D is essential. This vitamin is normally produced by the skin with the help of the sunrays. Apart from this, the body receives vitamin-D from fish and eggs too. Still, in women and aged men, who spend much of their time indoors, there is a chance of the body acquiring vitamin-D deficiency. Vitamin-D which is essential for healthy bones, if lacked by the body, can produce osteoporosis in women who are in the stage of menopause.
A healthy and nutritious diet helps a great deal to cope up with the deficiency of vitamin-D in the body. Further, experiencing the early morning sun and regularly exercising can keep the bones strong and healthy. If the body lacks vitamin-D even after trying out to increase the level of the vitamin, then the doctor prescribe vitamin-D tablets.
5.Use of Vitamin-E tablets:
Vitamin-E is one vitamin which is required by women in great amounts at certain points of time. Vitamin-E is found in great amounts in grains, nuts, eggs etc. Since Vitamin-E has anti-oxidant properties, it is used widely to protect the body from several heart-related diseases. For women, vitamin-E is also prescribed to cure the fibrocystic disease and to cure leg-pain.
Impact of excessive use of vitamin tablets:
Imagining vitamin tablets to be wonder-medicines and having them for each and every health-problem is harmful and often results in side-effects and other diseases. If B-complex vitamin tablets are excessively consumed, the body just excretes them out while certain other vitamin tablets, if taken unlimitedly, get deposited in the body leading to several side-effects.
The following are the harmful effects associated with excessive use of each kind of vitamin tablets:
•Vitamin A, if consumed excessively can cause frequent headaches and vomiting. This can make way for further side-effects like hair-loss, dry-skin and so on. In aged people, excess of vitamin-A can cause severe pain and breakage of bones even due to minor injuries or accidents.
•If vitamin-C is used without care and control, the calcium levels in the blood increases. This can lead to several health-problems like vomiting, abnormal thirst, fatigue etc. This also creates probability for kidney stones and other kidney-disorders.
•Vitamin-E tablets to should be consumed with caution. Generally, vitamin-E tablets are used to cure pain in the arms and legs. If used without care, weakening of muscles, tiredness, vomiting and such problems may be caused. If the levels of vitamin-E become dangerously high, there is a chance of bleeding in the body.
•Vitamins of the B-Complex group, if not properly used, lead to damaged nervous system. This may even cause one to lose balance while walking and during other movements.
Healthy diets in place of vitamin tablets
Most vitamin tablets are costly. A person who is normal and free of diseases can receive all vitamins needed for the body's activities, from a healthy diet itself. He need not take in extra energy through the vitamin tablets as in most cases, such consumption results in undesirable health-effects on the body. Even then, if one feels the need to use some kind of vitamin tablets, it must be after proper analysis and prescription from a doctor.
