A chennai based techie has fallen prey to the infamous online Nigerian phising scam, after believing that she won a big online British lottery of 2.5million pounds. She ended up losing a whopping Rs18 lakh of her earned money in the process.Officials at the cyber crime cell say the case is unique because the victim personally handed over an instalment of the "service charges" to the tune of Rs.three lakh to the 'lottery' agent whom she met at Chennai airport. The remaining Rs.15 Lakh she paid for "bank fee and other service charges" over the Internet.
Twenty six year old softwre techie at a leading IT firm recieved on the afternoon of February 4 an email with the subject:"CONGRADULATIONS, YOU HAVE WON 2.5 MILLION".She was on cloud nine but confined the excitement to herself.
She started responding to the lottery agency and kept the matter a secret even from her closest pals and family.she converted a sum of Rs.15 lakh into Uk pounds and transfered it to a bank account in London(provided by the phisher)in four instalments over a period of 25 days.
Ignorant of the fraud, she even acknoledged a reply mail informing on a so called British lottery agent having a transit in Chennai en routr to London.she handed over Rs3lakh in the lobby area of the airport and walked back with a smile after he assured her that the prize money will reach her in a weeks time.
She awaited the prize for twp weeks and realized that she had been tricked.she approached the Chennai city police later.
The case is under investigation with the Bank Fraud Wing of the citypolice.

A lesson for all out there thinking they can make a quick buck. It is high time that people realize that money does not come easily and nobody will be willing to give it without you paying a price for it. So beware of frauds like these and ensure that you are not cheated of your hard earned money. Good article. Hope it opens the eyes of all youngsters.

Really it is a very good lessons for those who want to earn easy money without working hard. No one will give you money just like that. We should realise that we cannot get money without hard work. and even educated people and that too software engineers who are aware of cyber crime are becoming victims. It is very sad to hear this. Next time atleast everyone should be alert. Even I got so many mails like this but i never responded to such mails because i know that no one will give us money just like that. I do not under stand how that IT girl believed when someone said that she won a lottery. She did not buy a lottery ticket nor she knows the person who sent the mail, but she believes that she won lottery. It is a very sad incident. From now on wards every one should be very cautious. This should be a lesson for everyone who get trapped by such mails. Now a days we are getting mails about jobs also. One fine day we get a mail that we are selected as an engineer in so and so firm in UK and they offer us salary and so many other benefits. Finally they ask us to send few thousands of UK pounds for Visa processing etc. But please don't believe such mails. you will be finally cheated.

It is time people believe in hardwork rather than only luck. The girl must have been bit more carefull. She should have confided the matter altleast to her parents. It is stupidity to hand over 3 lakhs just because you receive an mail saying you have won

Hi, I have received many mails like this, and in mail they have mentioned that they have despatched the DD and pay the courier charges and send your details. If we just read the message ten times, then we can understand whether it is true or not, because without knowing our address, how can they despatch. So, we must be very cautious.
