In this article I would like to present the only big festival named Batukamma festival which is celebrated in only Telangana region of Andhrapradesh state. Batukamma festival is celebrated by women and girls it is known as flowers festival.
Batukamma festival is a big nature admirer festival.It comes in the end of rainy season and the start of winter season at where the ponds and seas are filled with complete water. Batukamma festival is celebrated in only the Telanagana region of Andhrapradesh state. People belonging to this region living in the other cities and even in abroad are also celebrates this festival with utmost joy and happiness. Batukamma festival is celebrated by women and girls only.
History of Batukamma Festival
There are twos stories rounding about the history of this festival
1.Earlier when landlord system is underway due to their harassment one village young girl named Batukamma has committed suicide. But unable to forget her memories all villagers decided to celebrate a festival with her name and that is called as Batukamma festival.
2.Earlier in south India one king named Dharmangudu is ruling the Chola kingdom His wife's name is Sathyavathi. They has hundred male children. On one day all the children were killed and also the money and the kingdom of the king has lost. Seeing this loss the king's wife Sathyavathi prays for the Goddess Lakshmi for which the Goddess impresses and takes birth as her daughter. Saints who visited the kid has named her as Batukamma and gives blessings for the kid saying she will be the jewel of all women.Due to the birth of the kid the king retained his lost kingdom and fame.Due to this all people prayed to Batukamma and has got whatever they wanted such as money good health children. From that time onwards Batukamma festival is being celebrating every year.
Celebration of the Batukamma Festival
Batukamma festival starts on the Bhadrapadha Bhahula Amavasya the end of rainy season and the early days of winter season. Normally Batukamma festival is celebrated for 9 days the first day is played with Chinna Batukamma in which the size of Batukamma is small. The last day is the big day this is called as Saddula Batukamma. On this day women and girls wakes up in early morning takes head bath and wore new clothes and collects the flowers which available especially in this season and readies to make Batukamma. Batukamma is prepared in one big widen iron or bronze plate in this plate long leafs are arranged and upon this leafs flowers are arranged roundly. First Tangedu flowers then Gunugu flowers then Banthi, Chamanthi, Sithajada so as many flowers which are available are arranged as per choice. After complete preparation the preparad Batukamma will be kept before the God. Gauramma will be prepared using Harald and kept in Batukamma after doing pooja The Batukamma will be kept in every individual's threshold and the women sings songs and play rounds around the Batukamma. After this in the evening all are meets at one corner place in the streets and kepts everyone's Batukamma' s in middle and all women and girls surrounds the Batukamma 's in circle and sings songs and plays the Batukamma. This is known as Sadulla Batukamma the 9 th day of the Batukamma. Mixing Groundnut, Rice, Sugar, Maize, and other items some snacks will be prepared, these are called as Chaddimutalu. After complete of the Batukamma play all ladies exchanges these snacks from one another it shows the unity of the people.
Batukamam festival resembles the living nature of the Telangana region and especially this festival is for women brings joy and happiness among women.
