This resource deals with the working and construction of cold storage plant which are used as storing media for fruits and vegetables to keep it fresh. Cold storage basically works on ‘Refrigeration Cycle’ to produce cooling.

The cold storage are specially designed and built of concrete, stone or brick.
Its floors and ceilings, walls and doors are properly insulated with special insulating materials with low thermal conductivity.

Construction:

1. Compressor: It raises the temperature and pressure of refrigerant (the working medium, Ammonia) vapor coming out from evaporator.

2. Condenser: It condense (meaning 'phase change') the high pressure and high temperature refrigerant to high pressure and high temperature liquid.

3. Receiver: It receives the condensate from the condenser and collects it.

4. Evaporator: Evaporate (vaporize) the liquid refrigeration by taking/utilizing heat from atmosphere to be cooled and hence cooling is obtained. (Chilled air is produced)

5. Expansion Valve: It reduces the pressure and temperature of refrigerant from receiver pressure and temperature to evaporator pressure and temperature.

6. Blowers: It circulates chilled air in the refrigerated space to cool the fruits and vegetables.

Working:

The compressor compresses vaporized refrigerant(Ammonia) to high pressure and high temperature.

The condenser then liquefies the vaporized refrigerant to high pressure and temperature state.

The condensate from the condenser is collected in reservoir and allow to pass through expansion valve where its pressure and temperature decrease from earlier state.

The low pressure liquid refrigerant then allow to pass through refrigerated space where by heat of hot air of refrigerated space starts evaporate the liquid refrigerant hence, heat in the atmosphere decrease and cooling is produced. Blowers circulates the chilled air to stored fruits and vegetables.
