Review of Kung Fu Panda 2
Kung Fu Panda was a commercial and critical success in 2008 and so the bar was raised for the sequel. The filmmakers needed to strike the right balance between comedy, action and philosophical aspects to make the sequel a notch better than the original. The film does fulfill the expectations and the 3D adds zing to the film.
The script is the king yet again as the film is a roller coaster ride from the first scene itself. The comic sequences have been beautifully embedded in the script which is essentially an action entertainer. Action sequences are bigger and better than the original and in 3D they look awesome. The ancient China looks very colourful and beautiful and reflects the efforts put by the animation team in creating it.
The characterization is very sound. The film is much more serious in tone than the original and so many characters get a chance to evolve as the film progresses. Lord Shen, the primary antagonist, is completely different from Tai Lung, the villain in the original. Shen is more cunning and draws his powers through the weapons he has developed. There are a no. of layers in his character. Po's character too goes through an emotional journey as he finds about the early part of his life. Master Tigress too comes to know about the emotional facet to her otherwise robust personality.
The voice overs are excellent.
is a pure delight as the voice of Po. Gary Oldman, on the other hand, bring the required menace in his voice to give the required edge to the character of Lord Shen. Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen and Jackie Chan too are superb in the film.
I would give this film 4 stars out of five. If you get a chance, do savour the experience of watching Kung Fu Panda 2 in 3D. You will love it.
Box office performance of Kung Fu Panda 2
In spite being critically acclaimed, Kung Fu Panda 2 couldn't actually set the box office on fire and ended up grossing just around $ 165 million which was less than the original (it had earned in excess of $200 million). Nevertheless, the film was huge success in the foreign market and by the end of its run the film had grossed mighty $663 million in total against its budget of $150 million. It is presently the
directed by a woman.
