Medical transcription is a process of conversion of voice in to text format. Doctors in the United States have to maintain records of all their interaction with the patients. These medical records are required for processing insurance claims and for external referrals.
The doctors dictate the details of the patient's condition, diagnosis, treatment plan, etc., into a recording device. A Medical Transcriptionist is a person one who would listen to this audio recording and transcribe the content using a computer into text format.
India is emerging as a preferred destination to out source the transcription work because of the advantage of English-speaking manpower, low cost, and time zone difference as there is 11 hours gap between US and India (we are ahead). Because of the huge volume of work available, medical transcriptionists are in great demand.
Basic qualifications that are required to become a medical transcriptionist are to have a reasonably good knowledge in English, listening skills, good typing speed, and basic computer operation skills.
You have to undergo a training which may be from four months to six months in which they will teach you American accent, anatomy, drugs, medical terminology, and computer operations. You will be trained to transcribe voice files. The training given is such that even a non-science graduate can do this course and become a medical transcriptionist, but science graduates will have an advantage over graduates from arts or commerce.
Once you complete training, you would have acquired reasonably good skills to work as a medical transcriptionist. Depending on your performance, you may progress into senior medical transcriptionist, proof reader, quality controller, etc.
This profession requires commitment to work as there is turn-around-time for converting voice files into text and revert back to the client. You have to finish within a particular time every day and you cannot postpone the work.
You might have heard about home-based medical transcription. This is nothing but doing medical transcription from home. You need a headset to listen to voice files. You have to type with your hands, use toes to operate foot pedal, and concentrate well to type without errors. You need an internet connectivity which should be unlimited and uninterrupted. Also, you should have uninterrupted power supply. Dedication to work is a must. Though you are doing from home, you should commit yourself like working in an office. By doing from home you are saving travel time. Before you start home based, it is advisable to work at least one year in an office environment to understand the entire process of transcription work and until you gain confidence. Earnings depend on the accuracy level you achieve. There is no limit in earning in this profession. The more you work with good accuracy level, the more you earn. This profession is an every day learning process.
