How to choose a project?

I am a professor in a reputed college. I have often seen MCA students running around during their final semester to get a project to fulfill their academic needs. Most of them simply buy a project without knowing what exactly he/she is supposed to do after paying a heavy amount. But project selection and development plays a crucial role in their career.

What is a project work?

A project work is to be thought of as equivalent to on job training. It is a phase when students get a chance to practice/implement the knowledge they have gained in all the 5 semesters. Hence it is advisable to develop a software not to buy already developed software.

Project Vs Career

Project work done by the students as part of their academic program gives them an insight into the actual work they will be carrying out in a company when they get a job after studies. This duration can be a turning point in s/w professionals life. Also they will get a chance to test their knowledge and their capability in carrying out a work in a group or independently. Hence the project duration is vital in deciding ones future career path. That is why a great care must be taken in choosing a project.

Selection of a project

Care should be taken while choosing a project. You may ask getting even a single project is difficult then where is a choice. Start finding companies in the beginning of 5th semester itself.
The project need not be from a big company but you must develop it.
Don't go for testing projects since you'll not get an idea about the analysis and design phase.
Avoid buying projects especially IEEE projects where some implementation of a research work done by some unknown researcher is downloaded from Internet and sold to you.
Always go for projects to be developed using softwares which are worth learning.
Even if nothing works and you had to buy projects, then spend some time in learning the problem and try to redesign on your own.
Hard work never fails.

Essentials of a project work

Content of the project (what you are going to develop)
Size of the project
If the work allotted to you is a module, then the thorough knowledge about the entire project work.
Prepare a mistake free document - Always check for spelling and grammar mistakes, alignment and spacing of topics.
Programming skills or a clear knowledge about the software used.
Collect data by interacting with the end users of your work. This is very essential for the successful completion of the project work.
