Are the standards of I.I.T.s really up in the recent past?

The study and rankings released by Q.S. Asian University during the last year depicts picture about the downgrading and below par standards of Indian Institute of Technology or I.I.T.s in India. As per ranking list released by this University, in the rankings of first 200 Educational Institutions, India has got 12 rankings, 7 Indian Institute of Technology or I.I.T.s and 5 Universities finding their place. South Korea has 15 Universities whereas India has got only 7 Indian Institute of Technology or I.I.T.s in the list of Top 100 educational institutions.

Comparison of Indian Institute of Technology with world class institutions:

The ranking list of educational institutions released by this University contains educational institutions from 11 countries in the Top 200 spots. This list of Top 200 educational institutions contains 57 educational institutions from Japan and Japan has also occupies an enviable position by occupying 5 positions in the Top 10 positions of the list, which shows the quality of education in Japan. Educationists have observed that Japan's educational system has got international vision. Another important aspect of this International ranking is that the Hong Kong University has moved to 2nd place from 4th and the Singapore National University has moved to 3rd place from 10th place.

The expert group which conducted the study of various International Educational Institutions and released the rankings has opined that continuous efforts of Singapore National University in making the Curriculum with International face in the lines of International Teachers' Association, International Students' and International Standards of Education have paid off richly.

Interesting facts about Indian Educational Institutions given by these rankings are that the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai trailed to 36th place from the 30th place occupied last year. Like this, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur has moved back to 37th place from 34th place and Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi has gone back to 39th place from 36th place which it occupied last year.

In response to the above rankings, the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai administration has stated that they are concerned only with imparting excellent education and they are not concerned about any International rankings. However, there is light at the end of tunnel, yes, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur has achieved 57th place forward from 141th place last year, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati has chieved 171st place and the Hyderabad University has entered for first time below 200 ranking in the list. However, the administration of Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati are upbeat about this ranking system of International Educational Institutions and have observed that their aim is to achieve a place in the first 50 places in the list.

These studies and rankings have clearly showcased the strengths of Educational Institutions of Hong Kong and Japan. These rankings are awarded on the basis of following factors viz., Status of Students and their parents or guardians, International research facilities, standards of imparting education and integration of students and faculties of the Institutions.

Conclusion: Robert Frost has written "miles to go before I sleep………." and the same is very much applicable to the educational institutions situated in India especially the Indian Institute of Technology situated at various places in India and also known as world renowned technological institutions. Let us hope the administration of Indian Institute of Technology will surely take up these international rankings seriously and really try to improve upon these rankings. What is more required is the proper aid from the Govt. of India's side.
