Job Options in Armed Forces Medical Services


According to the needs of all the three services, physicians, dental surgeons, nurses and midwives for the medical branches are recruited through the medium of the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services. This item contains the procedural details for these positions in details which would prove to be useful for the candidates planning to enter the field.

The recruitment process of MBBS/post graduate doctors for army medical corps (AMC) for short service commission are undertaken by the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS).

Qualification for AMC


To apply under the scheme of short service Army Medical Corps, your age must be less than 45 years. You must be a pass out from the MBBS/MD course conducted from an Indian university recognised by the medical council of India and registered with the state council or its equivalent institution.

Seniority accorded on the degree of qualifications


The candidate having done post graduation get a the edge of seniority by 3 years, the candidate having done PG Diploma from MCI get the seniority by 2 years, the candidates having done the house job in a recognised hospital get the seniority edge by 6 months (new entrants) and those having completed PG with the house job get the edge of seniority by 42 months.

When the recruitment process begins?


The selection process is initiated by the AMC once every year in the month of March/April. The related advertisements are published in all the national/regional news papers dailies.

The cadets selected from the AFSC entry are to work as commissioned officer after the MBBS course. The type of commission would depend on the vacancies available along with the MBBS final examination and the optional in matriculation. The responsibility of short service commissioned officer rests with the candidates who become successful in the AFMMC.

Eligibility for the Army medical branch


  1. For this type of entry into the medical service, the candidate should be a pass in the 10+2 examination with at least 60 % marks in the science stream of physics, chemistry and biology but should be less than 50 % in any of the these three subjects. The candidates must have obtained at least 50 % in English subject too.

  2. Graduate in science with physics, chemistry, biology (botany/zoology) with all the requirements of the premedical tests as told above regarding the 10+2 examination.

Age limit

  • For the candidates having the qualification of 10+2- 22 years>
  • For the candidates having the graduation Science degree-24 years.

The selection process is done on the basis of the all India written examination is conducted once in a year followed by an interview at Pune, About 50 % of the successful cadets are given the SSC. The related advertisement is published in the month of January in all the important national/regional dailies.

Army dental corps


The BDS/MDS in the Army Dental Corps are recruited by the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) by two methods:

  1. Firstly, through direct permanent commission, and,
  2. Secondly, through the Short Service Commission.

For the first category of the recruitment, those candidates are eligible who have completed the BDS/MDS course with 60 % of marks from a recognised university/college and who have completed the mandatory rotator internship recognised by the Dental Council of India as well as have permanent dental registration certificate. The age limit of the candidates doing BDS should be 28 years and those doing MDS should be 30 years.

As for the second method of recruitment, the candidate must be a BDS/MDS from a recognised university/college with 55% marks in his last year examination and who fulfils the other two essentialities of the first methods of entrance. The age limit for this is 45 years. For entrance into this medium, the selection procedure is held once in a year in the month of March/April. Equal opportunities for AMC and ADC are available for the female candidates. The minimum duration for the short service is 5 years which could be extended up to a further period 10 years as per government rules.

Military nursing service


For the nursing officers, only the unmarried females who have been successful in the BSc nursing/ post certificate of BSc nursing/MSc nursing can apply for the short service commission. The age limit is between 21-35 years. They have to appear before the written test and interview conducted by the DGAFMS. Successful candidates are commissioned as lieutenant in the AMC. The short service commissioned officer could opt for the permanent commission after their completion of the 5 years of service period. They are medically examined also. A 3 year nursing course is also available for the nursing and midwife which could be taken up only by the females who are unmarried or a widow without any liability or a divorcee or a woman separated legally by her husband.

Besides this, she should've passed out 10+2 examination in physics, chemistry and biology with at least 50% marks in the very first attempt as also she should be a regular student. The age limit for this is 17-25 years.

Remount veterinary corps (RVC)


The candidate who is a bachelor in veterinary science and animal husbandry can apply for the remount veterinary corps in the Indian army. The age should be below 32 years. The posts are advertised by the Army Selection Centre for direct recruitment through the SSB. You can apply herein for the posts of officers, junior commissioned officers and other ranks.
