Swarna jayanti fellowship was started in commemoration of 50th year of independence of India by Government of India. This scheme provides special support and assistance to selected number of young candidates (scientists) having excellent record of achievements so as to help them in pursuing research in frontier areas of science and technology. The main feature of this scholarship is that it is not institution specific rather it is scientific specific and monitors their academic records very closely. Compensation/ support under Swarna jayanti scholarship covers all the requirements for performing researches and include a fellowship of Rs. 25,000/- per month for 5 years. This fellowship is in addition to the salary drawn by candidates from their parent institution.

Eligibility for Swarna jayanti scholarship

1. Candidate must have done Ph.D in Science/ Engineering/ Medicine.

2. Candidate must be an Indian national residing either in India or abroad.

3. The age of the candidate should be 30-40 years as on 31 December, 2011.

4. Scientists from abroad can work at any S&T institution within India but for this purpose, they are required to submit a letter from Head of such institution stating that administrative and basic infrastructural support to facilitate research will be provided.

5. Candidate should be very active in the frontier area of science and engineering with outstanding contributions from his side. Such contributions can be in the form of research publications and/ or patents, peer recognition from scientific community, awards etc. in his/ her area of research.
