Facebook.com is the most popular social network in the world. Most internet users visit Facebook atleast once in a day, unless it is blocked in their office/school/home. Many people can't even imagine a day without Facebook.

Facebook.com is down in India and you are not able to open Facebook

Well, at the moment, if you are in India and if you are using Airtel connection, you don't seem to have a choice. Facebook.com is not opening for Airtel users India.

If you try to access Facebook, you will get the following error:

Rumors are spreading and some of the interesting rumors I read are:

  • Airtel has blocked Facebook in India

  • Facebook is banned in India

  • Facebook content is censored in India

  • I don't usually trust the rumors. So I went ahead and made a phone call to Airtel and asked why Facebook.com is not opening in India. Initially, the support people had no clue why Facebook is blocked for me and he tried to help me change my computer settings. He did not accept that there is a problem in accessing Facebook. But when I proved it is not an isolated problem for me and all other sites except Facebook are opening currently, they changed their stand.

I asked Airtel to connect me to a supervisor who know enough about the problem and this is a media enquiry, they agreed to speak to higher authorities and finally gave me the official word on the Facebook.com problem with Airtel.

Facebook.com not opening in India for Airtel users: Official announcement

Even though Airtel has not made any official announcement, Airtel people confirmed to me over the phone that there is a technical problem and they are trying to resolve this error.

Facebook.com is currently down in India for Airtel users. However, Facebook.com is not blocked by Airtel but it is a technical problem.

If Facebook is not opening for you, try changing to Google DNS. Read this article to learn more about Switch to Google DNS to open Facebook.com in India.

It is very hard for many people to stay away from Facebook even for a short period of time. Switching to Google DNS temporarily would be a choice for those people. Once the technical issues are resolved and Facebook.com start working normally, you can go back to the old DNS settings.
