Thailand is termed as the 'land of the smiling people'. Bangkok, the Capital of Thailand is also known as the 'city of angels'. Bangkok brings and serenity of mind to any tourist who travels there. There are almost 400 Buddhist temples in Bangkok or 'Wats'. In this article I will talk about the famous tourist attractions in Bangkok.
The Royal Grand Palace
This is a palace where the earlier rulers of Thailand used to stay. Now this is a resting spot for tourists the world over. This palace has a number of enchanting Buddhist temples which are exquisite for their construction and craftsmanship. These temples bring a great peace of mind in people from other religions too.This is one of the most famous spots in Bangkok.
The Temple of Emerald Buddha
This is the purest
Buddhist temple
in
Thailand
which displays a big statue of the Lord Buddha. This was created in 1785. Once can find paintings and statues of lions, elephants etc on the walls of the temple which are unique pieces of craftsmanship. There are eight pillars outside the temple decorated with statues and sculptures which are a must see. This temple is one of the most ornate temples in the world.
Wat Arun
This is also known as 'the temple of the rising sun' and is as big as a tower. It's height is 74 meters. From top of this tower one can see the entire city. It is advisable to take a camera when you climb this Wat as the beauty seen below is spectacular. This temple is a great wonder.
Wat Pho
This temple is famous for a giant statue of the Buddha resting. This statue is 150 foot long and 40 feet high. Wat Pho is one of the largest and oldest wats in Bangkok. Wat Pho was an well known ancient university and students from many different places traveled here to study. A number of subjects were taught here.
Wat Mahathat
This

is a renown center for yoga and meditation. People from the world over come to this Wat to learn Yoga and meditation. This is great learning center for the 'Vipassna' technique of Buddhist meditation.There is a small market near this Wat which sells small statues of the Buddha, handicrafts, amulets etc.
Wat Traimit
This Wat is famous for its gigantic statue of Buddha which is made up of gold. This statue weighs 5 tones of pure gold. This is the world's largest statue of the Buddha and was accidentally discovered by historians and later converted into an important Buddhist temple. Much renovation work has been done on this Wat since the time it was accidentally discovered.
Noka Bazaar
This is also called the 'Venice of the East'. Like Venice, there are beautiful streams of rivers flowing all over the place. All streams are connected to the river 'Chao Fraya'. The local traders travel on boats in these streams selling fruits, vegetables, wheat, non-veg, fishes, purses, clothes and cold water. There are a number of hotels and restaurants across the river side. Tourists also engage in boating and shopping on the river.
Massage centers
Bangkok is also known known the world over for its massage centers. There are a number of massage centers which specializing in rejuvenating and relaxing a tired body. There are number of oils and techniques used in the massages.Bangkok is a city with the most number of massage centers in the world. If you happen to be in Bangkok, a massage is a must have!
Shopping centers
Bangkok is also known as a 'shoppers paradise' and one can get all kinds of products from electronic items to spices there. The 'Suan-Lum' bazaar is famous for silk and silk products. The 'Pet-Pong' bazaar is open uptil 2 am midnight. One can buy perfumes, bags, blankets and household gadgets at low price there. The 'weekend market' is one of the most famous and beautiful markets in the world. This market is only on Saturdays and Sundays.
Sea world
There are a number of sea attractions in Bangkok like 'Coral Reef' and 'Coral Island'. There are underwater transparent tubes in which people can take amazing glimpses of the animals and plants inside the sea. One can see a variety of fishes, sharks and flora through these transparent tubes beneath the sea. The ability to see everything beneath the sea without getting wet or drowning is an amazing experience. This is one thing you shouldn't miss if you happen to be in Bangkok.
Best time to visit Bangkok
The period from March to June is summer time and very hot in
Bangkok
. The period from July to October is the rainy season and the period from November to February is the winter season. There are a number of flights one can get from Mumbai, Madras and Calcutta to these places. Many tours and travel agencies offer packages for Bangkok. One can easily get a Bangkok visa at the Bangkok airport on arrival. One can avail a tour package of 22-27 thousand rupees for 5-7 days which is cheap compared to many other foreign tourist places.
