This article discusses the role of mammography in the diagnosis of breast cancer. This article also provides information on different types of Mammography tests. it also consists of various steps for such tests.

Mammography

Mammography is the best method to find out the lumps in the breast as early as possible. Mammogram is an X-ray picture of breast. Such x-ray was usually taken with lower energy rays. We can discover even minute lumps through mammography which can't be finding out by mere touching. We can also examine lumps even with a size of 3 millimeter through mammography. Breast cancer can be cure easily even if the tumor is find out as early as possible. Usually mammography is taken for two purposes. Mammography in order to examine the tumor is known as screening mammography. In the same way mammography for the diagnosis of breast cancer is known as diagnostic mammography. Most among the lumps find out through mammography may not be cancerous. It can be find out easily through certain less expensive simple diagnostic methods.

Steps of taking mammogram

At first the First the patient should sit or stand before the mammogram machine. Then she should put her breast between two plates of it. The plates of mammogram machine may be either plastic or mirror. Then the plates are attaching in such a way in which breast is put in the maximum extended level. After that several X-ray pictures will taken with different angles. Possibility of breast cancer can be found out by examining such pictures. Doctors can also suggest more diagnosis methods even if necessary by examining such X-ray pictures.

For whom the diagnosis is needed

Mammography will help to find out almost 90-95% cases of breast cancer as early as possible. It is useful for a woman who is more than 40 years old. Those women who are more than 40 years old should make mammography tests once in a while within two year. The close relatives of breast cancer patients should make such tests. Unmarried aged women, Those women who is not giving birth, category of later pregnancy, those women who have obesity, those who make hormone treatments and those who have cancer affected breast should take mammography test at the proper time.

Scintimammography

Scintimammography is the modern form of mammography. A radioactive tracer is injected to the body of the patient. It will spread all over the body through blood. Such radioactive tracer or dye may be absorbed by the tumors because of its specialty. Pictures will take from the Gama rays produced by this radioactive tracer. Scintimammogram pictures will help to make a clear understanding of tumor parts and its nature. Scintimammogram pictures are usually taken by using the scintillation camera.

Digital mammography

Digital mammography is the latest breast cancer diagnosis method. It was discovered just a few years ago. Digital mammography will help you to find out tumor with a size of even 0.05 millimeter. Digital mammography is also useful to make a clear clarification of the tumor affected part, its size and its nature. The main advantage of digital mammography is that we can make a detail observation on the computer screen. It is very popular in the Western countries. In India, Digital mammography is not become so popular as in the Western countries.

Ultrasonography

Ultrasonography is a method used for examining breast cancer. It will help to find out in which parts patient have to make Fine needle aspiration Cytology or FNAC and biopsy. Ultrasonography will help to differentiate lumps as well as swelling in the breast. Ultrasonography is completely free from radiation so that it can be done often. It is comparatively an easy method for the diagnosis of breast cancer.

Fine needle aspiration cytology

FNAC or Fine needle aspiration cytology is the easiest method for the diagnosis of breast cancer. A special kind of needle will attach to the ordinary syringe. Certain cells from the lumps will take by using this needle. Doctors can understand the nature of lumps by examining such cells. They can also confirm whether this limp is cancerous or not by observing such cells. FNAC can avoid the situation of taking biopsy to a greater extent. It is very simple method. The expense of FNAC is very less. The quality of the needle is very important in fine needle aspiration cytology. Doctors may not advice to take FNAC before mammography.

Position emission tomography scan

P.E.T or position emission tomography is the most modern diagnostic method of breast cancer. Biological mapping of certain organ or body part is held in order to understand the biological operations in position emission tomography. P.E.T will helps to confirm the nature of lumps completely. Certain studies held recently prove that P.E.T will help to avoid the surgeries to a greater extent. Position emission tomography is much expensive.

Single photon emission computed tomography

S.P.E.C.T scanning or single photon emission computed tomography is the observation of passage of blood through the body vessels. S.P.E.C.T scan help to take horizontal and vertical pictures of specific body parts. It will also help to take three dimensional pictures of specific body parts. A clear diagnosis of breast can be done by following this method. S.P. E. C.T will help the doctors to understand the accurate state and nature of breast cancer. Single photon emission computed tomography is also an expensive diagnostic method.
