Diarrhoea strikes without impunity no sooner than the rainy season begin. Over lacs of children die every year round due to this disease. Lack of awareness and hygienic sense among the mass are its main culprits. A little of precaution can keep this disease at an abeyance. This item discusses the diseases its causes and prevention methods.
What is diarrhoea?
When a combination of diseases attack followed by water discharge of faecal, the condition is said to be diarrhoeic. This is caused by infection in stomach triggered by protozoa and bacteria. It is like a scourge playing havocs in our countries upon lives of lacs of children. As a result, children die of this disease in great number.
Diarrhoea is infectious
It makes victims the children the most. But it’s not limited to children alone. It strikes the adults too with greater fury. But it strikes without sympathy children aged 6 months to 3 years causing death. Mothers who feed children milk in bottles put their children’s immensely to the
risks of the diarrheal attack
. Bacteria and protozoa thrive in galore on and in the bottle as well as on the rubber sucker. Diarrhea relishes gnawing at the weaker children and adults the most. The factors responsible for its widespread prevalence are lack of hygienic sense among the masses, poverty, living together in a crowded community place, using common washing/bathing facilities etc.
Diarrhea spreads through the air from the fecal of a diarrheal patient. All the bacterial elements spreading diarrhea come into contact with the open air contaminating food and water which when consumed by people make the sick of
diarrhoeal attack
. Animals are also its carriers and means of its spread.
It is also caused by the people who use the items of its patient which could be any thing being used by the patient ranging from handkerchiefs to towels to bed sheets to his cutlery. It also makes people prey that use water of polluted river, well, canals or a stagnant pond. Old book shelves, files etc gathering dust and dirt for long also form ground for its spread. It’s caused where people congregate in large numbers such as marriage functions, conferences, and crowded meeting places as well as during the festival period.
Warning signs of diarrhoea
Its sure shot sign is the
watery discharge
of stool exactly resembling with the color of rice washed thin water caused by the infection of intestines. This watery discharging may come over 50-60 times over in a single day. Now this condition is what is called diarrheal condition. Sometimes, blood might also come along with such discharges which a condition called as bloody dysentery. The patient from the attack reels under the torments of fever, weakness, loss of hunger, stomach pain, headache and vomits. The body of the muscles feels as something is tearing and pulling it apart. This condition stretches up to 2-4 days to a week almost. The fluid is life saving liquid and when it drains out completely, the essential minerals vital for life support system also flush out of the body throwing the patient to the brink of death. Blood pressure and pulses fall down to such an extent that can’t be read. Urine discharge comes to a grinding halt after gradually becoming slower and slower. Liver is damaged resulting into
renal failure
. Thirstiness aggravates to an alarming proportions. If not treated even at this stage, the patient ultimately dies.
Precautions against diarrhoea
Diarrheal infection
could be kept at an abeyance by observing some precautions. Bottle feeding should be stopped forthwith. Spoon and bowl should be used to milk feed children. Children on mother’s breastfeeding are less affected with diarrheal attacks as life saving substances is present in mother’s milk. Mother’s milk is not harmful even during diarrheal conditions.
Overview
: ORS is the savior against this dangerous condition. Over 11 lacs people die of the disease per India. This picture could be bettered by the timely uses of ORS.
