How To Control High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure or hypertension is a common problem not only in cities but in rural areas. Most of the people are unaware of the effects of high blood pressure. In this article I am providing a short but very important information of high blood pressure and how hypertension can be controlled.


Blood pressure or hypertension is the most dangerous disease now a days. Our heart pumps the blood in our body. When blood flows in arteries, it exert some pressure on the wall of artery. This is known as blood pressure. There are two types of blood pressure, Systolic pressure and diastolic pressure. When ventricle constrict, then blood flows in greater pressure and it is knows as systolic pressure but when ventricle expanse then it is knows as diastolic pressure. The normal value of blood pressure is 120/80 mmHg. The normal systolic pressure is 120 mmHg and diastolic pressure is 80 mmHg.
There are different stages of high blood pressure as follows:

  • Normal – 120/80 mmHg
  • Pre Hypertension- 121-140 / 81-90 mmHg
  • Stage 1 – 141-160 / 90 – 100 mmHg
  • Stage 2 – Above 161 /Above 100 mmHg.

Symptoms of High blood pressure

There is no proper symptoms of high blood pressure hence it is knows as the silent killer . Some symptoms which may arise are head ache, body ache, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea and vomiting, chest pain etc. So some other disease may cause these all symptoms.

Reasons of High blood pressure

There are many factors which are responsible for high blood pressure. The following type of people are at the risk to have high bllod pressure.

  • People above the age of 35 are more likely to get high blood pressure.
  • Weight and obesity are also the cuases of high blood pressure.
  • Pregnant woman always suffer with high blood pressure
  • The people who are not active.
  • The woman who takes birth control pills.
  • If your parents have high blood pressure then there is a risk that you will get the same.
  • People who smoke.
  • People who drink a lot.

Effects of high blood pressure

The high blood pressure is known as silent killer since its effects don't appear in intially stage. High blood pressure suddenly affects the different body parts. Some body parts which may be affected by high blood pressure are:

Heart : Heart is the main part of our body and due to high blood pressure there is a risk of heart failure and heart block. Heart pumps the blood in our body and in high blood pressure heart has to do more work and adversely affected.

Retina : Retina is the third and innermost layer of our eye. Due to high blood pressure there is a risk of retina degeneration. Retina degeneration leads to blindness for whole life.

Kidney: Kidney purify our blood and perform excretion in our body. Kidney forms urine and remove poisinous substances from our body. High blood pressure leads to kidney failure.

Brain Brain may be affected by high blood pressure. Due to high blood pressure there is a risk of stroke.

How to control High blood pressure?

High blood pressure must be controlled. Some important tips to control high blood pressure are:

  • Always consult your family doctor and follow his advice.
  • use the medicines which are prescribed by your doctor.
  • Check your blood pressure every week. Now apparatus are available to check your blood pressure at home.
  • Walking is the best way to control you high blood pressure. But remember it is not the substitute of medicines.
  • Give 15-30 minutes for yoga daily. It will be effective not only to control high blood pressure but it will protect you from many diseases and you will be active for whole day.
  • Use green leafy vegetable as much as possible in your diet.
  • If you are non vegetarian, try to use chicken instead of meat.


High blood pressure is now a common problem and it should be cured. It is not difficult to overcome this problem but most important thing is people are not aware and it is hard to find whether a person has high blood pressure or not. So if you don't have blood pressure and you have a chance to get it please go for routine checkup every month.
