There are many prominent agricultural universities in India who have been playing a great role in the development of the agricultural sector of India. In this article, a few descriptions of 10 prominent universities of India are given with their contact information. There are many reputed agricultural universities in India. There is a association called in India. About 51 universities are its members. Here is a list of top 10 universities with brief description.

Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University


The university was established in the year 1964 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. The aim of this university is to provide education in the agricultural sector and extension of its research.

There are 13 colleges under this university. These include four agricultural polytechnic colleges, one veterinary polytechnic college and seven regional agricultural research stations. It has 67 research stations, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, extension education unit, agricultural information and communication centre. The university also set up district agricultural advisory and transfer of technology centers. There are more than 5000 employees engaged in these units employed by the university.

The university also offers distance education of agriculture.
80% budget of the university comes from the State government.
The degrees offered by the university are undergraduate degree, post graduate degree and Ph. D degree in faculties, v i z veterinary science and home science, agriculture.

It has played a leading role in developing various crop species. Two major species is hybrid rice APHR-1 and APHR-2. The Krishnaiah blackgram species is released by the researchers of this university. Many chilli varieties and red rot resistant sugarcane is also released by them.
The world famous cattle breed Ongole has been preserved and upgraded by the university.

It has taken measures to extend the agricultural education to the general people through its TV program Rythu Mitra and radio program on All India Radio.

Assam agricultural University


The university was established in the year 1969 in Jorhat, Assam.
It is playing a lead role in the agricultural sector of Assam which provides education and research in agriculture and its allied science and also extends its service to the rural areas.

The colleges under this university are
(a) College of agriculture, Jorhat

(b) College of Home Science, Jorhat

(c) College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara

(d) Biswanath college of Agriculture

(e) Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science

It offers degrees in the agricultural science, veterinary science and in home science.

It has four Krishi Vigyan Kendra under this university. There is a Directorate of post graduate studies. The university has developed about 40 rice varieties.

CCS Haryana agricultural university


The university was established in the year 1970. The colleges under this university are
(a) College of veterinary science

(b) College of agriculture

(c) College of Basic science

(d) College of animal science

(e) The Indira Chakravarty College of home science

(f) The college of agricultural engineering and technology

It has set up krishi Vigyan Kendra in each district of the state and ten Regional research station.

Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology

Dr B. S. Bisht is the Vice chancellor of the university.
There are nine colleges under this university which are as follows:
(a) College of agriculture

(b) College of veterinary science

(c) College of home science

(d) College of basic science and humanities

(e) College of technology

(f) College of Fisheries

(g) College of Post graduate studies

(h) College of Agribusiness management

(i) College of forestry

There are various research center set up by the university. These are viz Crop research center, horticulture research center, vegetable research center, livestock research center, poultry research center, fishery research center and mushroom research center. There is an agricultural technology information center set up by the university. It provides diagnostic service to the farmers and it also supplies agro inputs to them. There is a telephonic help line to help the farmers.

A practical crop production program for undergraduate student is established by the university along with a rural work experience program. It has developed many technologies in agricultural sector such as technique of high density mango orcharding, hydroponics protocol for producing tissue cultured plant, technique for producing off season vegetables and flowers in poly houses, mushroom production in a large scale in controlled areas etc.
Vaccines for marec, palm and salmonella diseases are developed by the researchers of this University.

Punjab Agricultural university


It was established in the year 1962. This university has taken a lead role in green revolution in India. It is also a leading university to enhance the production of livestock and poultry production. It achieved the best agricultural university award by ICAR in 1995.

There are five colleges under this university which are as follows:
(a) College of agriculture

(b) College of agricultural engineering

(c) College of veterinary science

(d) College of home science

(e) College of Basic science and humanities.

It offers degrees in post graduate and Ph. D. it has 50 departments in which there are 51 faculties of master degree and 42 faculties of Ph D degree.

Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology



It is the second largest agricultural university in India.
Professor D P Roy is the Vice Chancellor now.
The university was established in the year 1962. It has eight colleges under this university which are as follows:
(a) College of agriculture

(b) College of veterinary science

(c) College of science and animal husbandry

(d) College of agricultural engineering and technology

(e) College of home science

(f) College of basic science and humanities.

It has the facility of graduate and post graduate degrees in all these colleges and faculties available there.

It has 4 regional research station funded by the World bank and ten regional research and technology transfer station. An extension education program is operating by the university in several villages to help the farmers. It has eight Krishi Vigyan Kendra under this program.

There are 58 techno educational campuses across the state where teaching and research and extension of agricultural education for seed production are carried out together.

About 119 varieties of crops are developed by the researchers of the university. Recently developed species are Manaswini (OR 1912-24) and Ranidhan of rice, Devi, a species of ground nut, Utkal Raja and Utkal Pragyan of tomato and Jagannath and Balabhadra of cashew nut.

It has a center for mushroom production known as "the Center for tropical mushroom research and training". It has already trained 19,041 farmers in this field.
The university has good library facility. There are eight hostels for girls and eleven hostels for boys which can accommodate 1700 students.
It is celebrating its golden jubilee this year.

Indian Agricultural Research Institution , New Delhi


It was originally set up in the year 1905 in Pusa, Bihar and shifted to New Delhi in the year 1936.

The director is the head of the university. It offers M. Sc degree in 22 disciplines and Ph D degree in 19 disciplines. It has achieved the best university award by ICAR in 1995. It has six multi disciplinary centers at Delhi ad 19 divisions across the country. There are nine regional stations under the university situated at different parts of the country such as Shimla, Tutikandi, Indore, Kalimpong of West Bengal, karnal of Haryana, Katrain of Himachal Pradesh, Pune, Pusa of Bihar, Nilgiris of Tamil Nadu.
There are two off season nurseries situated at Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and oe Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Haryana.

Birsa Agricultural University


It was established in the year 1981. There are three colleges under the university namely Ranchi agricultural College, Ranchi Veterinary College and College of forestry. It is the first university in India set up in the tribal belt of eastern zone. Its aim is to develop the backward classes economically. It is located at a distance of 8 km from the Ranchi railway station.
It has been organizing training programs for officials and extension functions.

Chandra Shekhar University of Agriculture and Technology


It is situated at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The aim of this university is to make provisions for agricultural education of rural people of Uttar Pradesh. Research in the various aspects of agricultural sector has been provided by the university along with field and extension work of agriculture.
It offers degrees in B Sc (agriculture, home science), M Sc (agriculture, home science), Ph D in agriculture.

The entrance examination of this university is held in May and June. It has also B Tech course in agricultural engineering, computer science and electronics and management course in Agribusiness.
Financial assistance is provided to the brilliant students of post graduate. Stipends and scholarships are also given to the students of backward classes.

University of Agricultural Sciences


It was established in the year 1964. There are eleven colleges under this university. It offers Ph D degree in 45 disciplines. This university is bifurcated into two university namely University of Agricultural Science, Bangalore and University of Agricultural Science, Dharwad.
