How to apply for tatkal passport?

Passport is very important for each and every citizen in India. It is not only useful for travelling abroad but also act as an identity for a particular person. Different procedures are followed for applying passport and for applying tatkal passport. In this section let me explain about the rules and formalities that have to be followed for applying tatkal passport.



If we apply for a fresh passport usually it will take 4-5 months including police verification and it will reach the applicant before 4 months. Apart from any urgent situation, if we are applying/renewing passport it will take same 4 months. SO to take the passport in a short interval of time Government of India introduced a new concept called as Tatkal passport which can be obtained in 7-12 days.

At what situation tatkal passport can be applied-


If suppose a person is suffering from serious health issues and he has to travel abroad for treatment or for any surgery in that case he can apply for tatkal passport or if a person has to travel abroad for some official purpose to sign a business deal or to get some knowledge transfer then he can apply for tatkal passport. Or if a person has to travel to nearby country for some pilgrim trip then he can apply for tatkal passport.

Documents required for submitting the application form for tatkal passport

  1. Application form- This application form can be downloaded from the following site - http://passport.gov.in/cpv/Forms.htm. There are two types of application form are available in the website where the first one is used mainly for fresh issuing or for re-issuing or for any lost or damage of the passport then the applicant can down load the application form type-I from the site and the type-2 can be downloaded for any address change or for some police verification etc. All the details that are related to the application form download are given in the above mentioned site and applicant can download the form accordingly.

  2. Letter to the passport officer- Since we are applying for tatkal passport, a separate letter has to written and have to be submitted along with the application form. This letter should be a formal letter and the applicant can click here to go through the sample letter on how to frame the tatkal letter.

  3. Colored Photograph with 3.5x3.5 sizes with white background has to be submitted as per the law.

  4. Address proof – Address proof of the candidate should be submitted along with the application form. Address proof can be ration card or some driving license that can explain the current and permanent address clearly is mandatory.

  5. Old passport - If we are applying tatkal passport for renewal or for correction of some address and other details in that case we have to submit the copy old passport and the same will be verified during passport verification.

  6. Birth certificate- The date of the applicant which is mentioned in the birth certificate should match with the date that is mentioned in the application form, if there is any mismatch in the date or month then the application will be rejected.

  7. SPECIMEN VERIFICATION CERTIFICATE – Annexure F – This certificate is very much mandatory for applying just tatkal passport alone. The certificate has to be verified and signed by the any state or central government official like secretary, joint secretary, deputy secretary or cabinet secretary of Government of India, Or superintend of police, IG, commissioner , magistrate, lawyer working in state government or supreme court etc. And these people can verify this certificate and sign the form. For this applicant has to submit the passport size photograph. And also the verifying authority should keep a rubber stamp seal on the photograph followed with the complete details of the verifier which includes the ID no and his designation etc. This certificate can be downloaded from the site http://passport.gov.in/cpv/ANNEXUREF_vc_tatkaal.htm

  8. Annexure-B - If suppose the applicant is working for a state or central government then has to fill the following form and has to submit the same. This is a self-attested form and the applicant has to affix their photo and has to give the clear description on the name, designation and their official address.   9. Annexure –D – Suppose if we want to add the spouse name in the and this can be added in the form Annexure D. And this form has to be filled with the joint photograph and has to be affixed for the notary public attestation with their rubber stamp on the photograph.   10. Any of the three below mentioned document ha to be submitted as an photo identity document-

    • Voter ID card.
    • Service card suppose if the person is working for state or central government.
    • Caste certificate like OBC/ST/SC specifying the caste of the person.
    • Ration card of the person where he is living.
    • Sale document of Sale deed of the person where he is currently living
    • Army license.
    • If the person is a pension holder then pension documents has to be submitted.
    • PAN card
    • Bank statement along with the copy of Bank pass book
    • Students ID card from the institution which he belongs to.
    • Driving license card.

  11. AFFIDAVIT Annexure -I form – This form is a self-declaration form which has to be attested by the notary public.   12. Tatkal Fee processing- A special fee has to be paid, if the applicant is allying for tatkal passport. And there are two slabs for which they can pay the fees. And the fee structure is mentioned below-

    • If the applicant is applying for a new passport then for getting the passport from 1-8 days the applicant has to pay 1500+1000(passport fee) totally = Rs 2500 for getting the new passport.
    • If the applicant is applying for a new passport then for getting the passport from 8-14 days the applicant has to pay 1000+1000(passport fee) totally = Rs 2000 for getting the new passport.
    • If the passport is damaged or lost then applicant has to pay 2500+2500(passport fee) totally = Rs 5000 has to be paid if he needs the passport in 1-8 days.
    • If the passport is damaged or lost then applicant has to pay 1500+2500(passport fee) totally = Rs 4000 has to be paid if he needs the passport within 8-14 days.
    • If the passport is expired then the applicant has to pay 1500+1000(passport fee) totally Rs- 2500 has to be paid by the applicant and he will receive the passport within 3 working days.
    • If the passport is damaged or lost then applicant has to pay 2500+2500(passport fee) totally = Rs 5000 has to be paid if he needs the passport in 1-8 days.

Instruction for filling up application form.


  • The photo which is going to be pasted in the first page of the application form has not to be signed whereas the other photos affixed on the other pages have to cross signed and sent.

  • Signatures or thumbprint has to be taken care that, they are to be filled only inside the box and should not cross or touch the boundary

  • For Name column - Full name has to be given as given like how it is given in the birth certificate.

  • Suppose if you feel that the column is null. Rather than leaving it as blank the applicant has to fill it as Not applicable.

  • Date of birth has to be filled in DD/MM/YYYY as mentioned in the birth certificate.

  • Personal Particulars form(PP Form) has to be filled and submitted along with the application form which is mainly to write some people name as reference who resides near by the house.

  • Some points to be noted while applying for tatkal passport-

  • All the information has to correct and perfect, if any wrong information is submitted RS.5000 fine will be issued as a penalty.

  • If suppose the passport is lost then the applicant has to submit the application along with the copy of the FIR which is filed in the police station, photocopies of the first and last four pages.
