In this article, I have listed the most unique festivals which are celebrated in different parts of the world. Few of the festivals are so unique that they have made their entry in the Guinness Book of World Records. I look forward to be part of these celebrations once in my lifetime.
Different countries celebrate different festivals. Each festival has a story and motto behind it. The main purpose of the festivals is to create unity and togetherness amongst the people. Mostly we have heard about the common festivals but I am sure, you must not have heard about the festivals which I have listed in my article below. In this article, I have tried to list down various festivals celebrated in different areas of the world and are quite unique compared to other normal festivals.
Thai Lantern Festival
Yee Peng
or the Floating lights festival is a very unique and famous festival in Thailand. It is celebrated in Northern Thailand during the 2nd month of the Thai Lanna calender; on the full moon night. The purpose of this festival is to pay respect to lord Buddha and it is believed that all the mis-fortune would float away with these lanterns.
All the people gather at the bank of Ping river and the festival starts with an hour long Buddhist chantings by the monks and then the lighted paper lanterns are floated in the sky. The paper lanterns are known as
Khom Loy
in Thai language.
Before floating these lanterns in the sky, first the candles inside the lanterns are lit and then held for few minutes so that the hot air inside the lantern inflates it. Once the lantern is inflated, all the people make a wish and then float the lantern in the sky.
The view of the flickering candles in the sky just looks incredible.
Noche de Rábanos
Noche de Rábanos also known as the
Night of the Radishes
is a famous festival of Mexico. The festival is celebrated with radishes which weigh around 3 kilograms and are around 50 cms long. The radishes to be used in the festival are not harvested during the harvest season. These are let grown to the huge size so that they can be used during the festival.
Various artists and sculptors carve these radishes to create unique figures and scenes of animals, humans etc. The one whose sculpture is the best wins the contest and his/her picture comes in the newspaper.
Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme
Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme also known as the
Festival of near death experience
is celebrated in a small village in Spain. The festival is very weird and is celebrated in the month of July every year.
The people who have experienced near death experiences in the past year, participate in this festival. The relatives of carry the person in coffins to the Santa Marta de Ribarteme church. There are fireworks all around and then the participants tell their story to the crowd.
Rabechilbi Turnip Festival
Rabechilbi Turnip Festival is celebrated in Switzerland on second Saturday in the month of November. This festival is much like the
Haloween's Day
celebrated in US by carving pumpkins. Santa Marta de Ribarteme festival is celebrated with turnips. Everyone, be it a child or an old person, carves the turnips and lit a candle inside it. Unlike pumpkins, no one carves scary faces on turnips.
When the sun sets, people take out a parade with these candle lit turnips. People also decorate their homes with these turnips. The view really looks awesome.
This festival has also made an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records.
