Brief overview on sport wise India’s medal winners in Olympic Games till 2012

Olympic Games, treated as the world’s largest and prestigious sporting event are going to start very soon. Sporting persons from India are going to examine their luck in winning an Olympic medal by performing well in their respective events. Here in this article I would like to share the details of how many medals do India has won in Olympics so far along with the names of the sports and sport personalities.



Introduction


London city has getting decorated to represent the most spectacular sporting event of Olympics from 27 of this month onwards. Sport persons are readying their weapons to perform well and win medal in 301 categories of 26 sporting events. All are waiting to fulfill their long time dreams. Nevertheless of the matter of all other countries these games are most prestigious for India. India has good record only in Hockey sport has participated in 21 Olympics and has won only 18 medals. Well India by winning 3 medals in 2008 Beijing Olympics has created history and participating in London Olympics with huge expectations. India is expecting to win at-least 12 medals in 2012 London Olympics. Well before the start of Olympics here in this article I am going to share the details of India's so far journey of winning medals in Olympics along with the names of the sports-persons and the sporting events.

Hockey(8 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze)


Indian Hockey has some special history in entire Olympic history. Indian Men's Hockey team has won its first Gold medal in 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Form there onwards Indian Hockey team has remained as the champions for six times continuously. Means India has remained as the champion for 28 years. In 1960 Rome Olympics Indian has managed to win Silver medal but later in 1964 Olympics again India has won Gold medal. Later India has settled down to bronze medal in two Olympics, in Moscow Olympics, Indian Men's Hockey team has again won Gold medal in 1980. Here comes the end of Indian Golden era in Olympics. Since then India haven't won any single medal in Olympics till now.

Wrestling


Dadasaheb Jadhav

Dadasaheb Jadhav holds the record of first to win the medal in the category of individual event. In 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Jadhav has won bronze medal in wrestling event and made Indians proud.

Tennis


Leander Paes

After Jadhav, Leander Paes has made nation proud by winning another medal in individual event. Leander Paes by winning the bronze medal in the category of men's tennis event in 1996 Atlanta Olympics has held high India's name in International venues.

Weightlifting


Karnam Malleswari

Telugu lady Karnam Malleswari from Andhrapradesh state has won bronze medal in 2000 Sydney Olympics in weight lifting event. She has created a history as the first individual woman to win a medal in Olympic Games.

Shooting


Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore has created the record of first Indian to win the Silver medal in individual category of shooting event. In 2004 Athens Olympics, Rajyavadhan has won Silver medal in Double Trap shooting. It is the only so far best performance by an Indian in the individual event.

Shooting


Abhinav Bindra

2008 Beijing Olympics holds special place in Indian Olympics history. In these Olympics for the first time India has won three medals, one of them is a Gold medal. Indian ace shooter Abhinav Bindra has won Gold medal in Olympics in the individual event of 10 meters air rifle shooting. Abhinav has created the history of winning a Gold medal in individual event.

Boxing


Vijender Singh

Vijender Singh has created the history of the first Boxer to win a medal in Olympics games. Vijender has won bronze medal in middle weight category in Beijing Olympics.

Wrestling


Sushil Kumar

India has won a medal in wrestling after the 1952 Olympics by the hard work of Sushil Kumar. In the medal event of Beijing Olympics Sushil Kuamr has won bronze medal in wrestling event and earned name and fame for the nation.

Conclusion


India the second most populated nation in the world has failed to win medals in Olympics in past is expecting to do better in London Olympics 2012. Talented, young and hardworking sports persons are participating in these games that have the capability of winning medals. Well all-most all Indian sport lovers are eagerly waiting to watch Indian sport person's performance in the upcoming Olympics. Let us all hope this time the sport persons definitely makes the nation proud.
