Mary Kom, hope of India in London Olympics, 2012
Mary Kom is our hope at London Olympics, 2012. She is the world boxing champion for five times who is a mother of two children. She is from Manipur. Mary Kom, who is a star in the boxing world and five times champion of World boxing championship has been qualified for the London Olympics. For the first time this game is included in this biggest game, London Olympics and she will participate in this game in the 51- kilo category and now she is the hope of our country in this game. Few details of her life and achievement are discussed here.
Early life and achievements of Mary Kom She is popularly known as Mary Kom but her actual name is Aka Mangte Chungneijang who was born on the first day of March in 1983 at Kangathei in Manipur. Being a mother of two children she is the number one boxer of the world now. Her parents are M. Tonpu Kom and Saneikham. She started her education at Christian Model School at Loktak, Manipur.
In her early life she was a well known and all round athlete in her state whose first preference was at javelin. She wanted to try her luck at boxing after seeing Dinko Singh and she also wanted to assists her family financially.
She regarded gold medalist boxer Dinko Singh as her idol who showed her the path of boxing. She has won many awards and medals in boxing champions. She had achieved many awards and achievement which are discussed below.
In the first State level Invitation women's Boxing Championship, she had shown her talent for the first time. She became the champion in this national championship. Then she won the Gold medal in Seventh East India Boxing Championship held at West Bengal. In the year 2001 in Chennai, she had won the gold medal in first women national boxing championship followed by the East Open Boxing Championship in West Bengal and second senior world women boxing championship at New Delhi in the same year. She achieved the third senior world women boxing championship in 2002 at Aizwal and after that she won the fourth and fifth senior world women boxing championship held at Assam and Jamshedpur respectively.
M C Mary Kom boxing academy is a boxing academy for the girls set up by this boxing championship. She had also set up a games village in Imphal.
Mary Kom's international achievements Mary Kom has achieved many international achievements which are discussed below.
The second Asian women boxing championship held at Bangkok is her first international achievement. She got chance to participate in the first Asian women boxing championship but she could not concentrate on her training because she had lost her luggage and passport in train on the way to the training. After winning the first title, she won it for successive three years at Haryana and Taiwan.
In the year 2001, Mary Kom first achieved the Women's world amateur boxing championship held at Pennsylvania, USA in the 45 kilo category, followed by three successive World Championships in 2002 in 45 kilo category, in 2005at 46 kilo category and in 2006 in 46 kilo category held at Turkey, Russia and India respectively. She also achieved the Venus Cup International boxing championship.
She has won the AIBA Women's world boxing championship held at Kazakhstan. Then at 2010 Asian Games held at China, she achieved the Bronze medal and again achieved the Gold medal in 2010 at AIBA women's world boxing championship.
The honors and awards to Mary Kom by the Government of India The Government of India has honored Mary Kom for her talent in this field which makes us proud. In the year 2004, she has achieved the Arjuna award and she was given the "Padmashree" award in the year 2006. The Rajib Gandhi Khel Ratna award was also achieved by her. The Limca book of records" selected Mary Kom as the "people of the year". The "CNN-IBN & Reliance industries real heroes award" and "Pepsi MTV youth icon" were achieved by her in the year 2007 and 2008 respectively. The Zomi students' Federation also felicitated her. She is also the ambassador of Int'l boxing association. She has been selected as the Sportsman of the year 2010 and honored by the Sahara Sports Award in the same year.
Though boxing was not a popular game for many years in India but this view is going to be changed these days. The boxers from Northeastern states of our country are becoming very successful in boxing. They are very talented boxers but the only support they need is some financial help from the Government. Though they are financially week they are dedicated to this game and it feels us proud.
Hope, Mary Kom will be able to fulfill her dream in London Olympics. On 15th may, she had entered into the quarterfinals of World Championship held at China by defeating Norway's boxer Marielle Hansen. From her achievements, we can hope that she will definitely bring the gold medal in London Olympics. She is in a good form now. Wish her success in the London Olympics 2012.
