COIMBATORE: Technological advances in civil engineering can be seen in the areas of materials, analytical tools and design, R. Nakkiran, Chief Engineering Manager, Global Engineering Services, ECC Construction Division, Larsen & Toubro Limited, Chennai, said here on Thursday.

Inaugurating a national conference on “Frontline Areas of Civil Engineering” organised by the Department of Civil Engineering of the V.L.B. Janakiammal College of Engineering and Technology, he termed civil engineering as the oldest engineering discipline, only next to military engineering.

Tracing the growth of civil engineering, from the time of the pyramids, hanging gardens of Babylon and the Great Wall of China, he said it had grown along with civilisation. “From those days till date civil engineers have been responsible for transforming an idea or a dream into reality. In spite of many technological advances a good civil engineer should ensure that the motto of ‘Safety, Quality and Economy’ in his work remains unchanged,” Mr. Nakkiran said. Pointing out the emerging trends in civil engineering, he said that in the present scenario it required marshalling of resources to produce a specified set of results within a definite time span. He was also happy that a civil engineer’s role as a project manager was being extensively recognised.

S. C. Natesan, Principal, and B.G. Vishnuram, Head of Department, spoke.
