In this article, I would like to explain about the importance of Note Making. Notes help us to remember important points and also help us to refresh our memory while preparing for exams, debates, preparing essays and so on. Also they will be very helpful for future reference. So it is necessary to prepare notes in effective way.
Note making is a creative process in written communication. Notes help us to remember important points and also help us to refresh our memory while preparing for exams, debates, preparing essays and so on. They form a record of key ideas that what we are listening or learning. They will be very helpful for future reference. So it is essential to prepare our notes in efficient and effective way. When making notes, it is necessary to find out the key ideas from the subject rather than noting everything we listen. Once the key ideas have been gathered, it is necessary to recast them in our own words. Most importantly these notes are preparing for our own benefit. So another person does not need to know our shortcuts, symbols used, pattern of presentation, etc. At the time of taking notes to paper or any other material we have full powers of recall. But within a day we will have forget over seventy-five percentage of words and meaningful data which was written. So it is necessary to prepare note in our own words by connecting all key ideas of speech or from a descriptive passage which was well understood. It is not necessary to make notes in same order as speaker says or written in a passage. For the efficient note making, appropriate techniques should be use. In good notes, include key words, headings, sub-headings, symbolic representations, comments and so on. These make notes simpler, efficient, easier to understand and very helpful for future reference. Inclusion of diagrams, symbols and flowcharts enhance notes and reduce the length of notes. Highlighting and underlining of important points will focus our attention and can able to find out important points quickly. Abbreviating and summarizing the content help to reduce the length and would be possible to save more time. Also notes should have good introduction and summary because they are usually summarise the key ideas. Using lines, circles, arrows and other markings we can make visual notes. By the usage of visual notes, we can easily recall the important points from memory. In this method, we are connecting all key ideas in unique visual way. So these points are easier to remember and recall than fully written notes.
Good notes should have following features:
- Good notes should be brief.
- Only relevant point should be noted.
- Suitable key words and phrases should be use.
- Key ideas and important points should be in a logical sequence.
- Symbols and abrevations can be use.
- Highlighting and underlining of important points will focus our attention towards important point quickly.
- Good introduction and conclusion is necessary.
- It should be easily understandable.
- It should be well organized for better understanding.
Common purposes of note making are:
- For studying subjects.
- For writing essays, articles and so on.
- For exams.
- For speeches and presentations.
- To memorise whatever heard.
Points to remember while making notes are:
- If make notes from a article or passage, read whole data and try to understand key points. If make notes from a speech or presentation, write down important information and find out key points.
- Highlight main ideas and key points.
- Arrange all important points in logical sequence.
- Try to use symbols and abbrevations to make note simpler and easier for future reference.
- Condense all important ideas in suitable format.
Difference in Note Making and Note Taking
Note making and note taking are personal activities. Note making is a leisurely activity associated with reading and note taking is a speedy activity associated with listening. Both note making and note taking are very essential and important for learning purposes. Both help us to record information whatever we listen or read in organized manner for future reference. But both method following two entirely different procedures.
Note making is a creative process. For better and understanding notes, more time and important key ideas are required. In this process, it is not necessary to take down all the words speaker says or reading from passage. Only relevant points are enough for make notes brief and easier to understand.
Note taking is the speedy process of writing down quickly what we hear or read without thinking about the matter which speaker says. It may be important points read by a lecture, presentation or a speech. Note taking allow to write large amount of information to paper very quickly. But this process is not effective like note making, because note making requires enough time to condense main ideas in suitable format and thus make note very effective.
