India is a thickly populated country with 130 crore population. India is called a poor country among the nations. However, it is said that the Member of Parliament of India are not poor but are rich. In this article, the author highlights the facilities and privileges granted to an MP in India.
Introduction
India is a thickly populated country with its population over 130 crore. The country follows a parliamentary system with two houses called the Lok Sabha (Lower House) and Rajya Sabha (Upper House). The Members to Lok Sabha are elected by the citizens of India, and the members to Rajya Sabha are nominated and selected by elected representatives. The Members of Indian parliament lead a very good life style with the help of public money. They have been provided with numerous facilities to enjoy life. Many in our country aspire to become Member of parliament to lead a special life. However, in India it is very difficult to become a Member of parliament without the support of any party with money power and muscle power.
The monetary facilities available to a Member of Parliament .
1.The monthly salary of a Member of Parliament is Rs. 50,000(Rupees fifty thousand only).
2.An MP gets a daily allowance of Rs. 2000 per day whenever the parliament is in session.
3.An MP can travel in any train in the AC First class or in executive class free of cost.
4.When an MP proceeds outside India he gets free first class train fare or Air fare.
5.In any year, an MP can undertake 34 free Air journeys to any destination. During the journey he /she is entitled to carry their spouse or a relative who will also take free passage.
6.While an MP resides at New Delhi, If any of his/her spouse wishes to visit Delhi, they are permitted to avail 8 times free Air passage.
7.An MP is provided with free government guest house /bungalow with all amenities provided free of cost. The MP can use 50000 unit electricity and 40000 litres of water free of cost.
8.An MP is entitled to have three land line telephone connections without any hire charges or additional installation charges.
9.An MP can avail free medical facility for whole family members by just paying Rs.500 per month.
10.An MP is entitled for Rs. 45000 to meet his office expenses. Out of this 15000 is earmarked for stationery alone.
11.An MP gets a pension of Rs. 20000 after completing a single term as MP. If he completes a second term he is eligible for additional Rs. 1500 that makes Rs. 21500 per month.
What are the other privileges and earnings
What I quoted above are the legal, officially declared privileges and earnings. There could be other earnings for an MP which can not be specified. Every visitor to the MP carries something or other as a gift to MP. Every individual from his constituency looks at him as a great man and never let him spend money from his own pocket. All his requirements are taken care by his party men and voters in his constituency. All rich people in the constituencies are under the command of the MPs and they obey the instructions of the MP for their survival. Thus the MPs roll in wealth without any expenditure and save their whole income.
What is the qualification required to become an MP
There is no qualification required for anyone to become an MP except the peoples whole hearted support and the party's high command support. An MP should win the heart of the people of the constituency and should be in the good books of the party leader to get a seat to contest elections. For this an MP needs to pay lot to the party's high command.
Conclusion
In general, the facilities, privileges and cash available to an Indian Member of Parliament is much more for every Indian to aspire to become an MP. We can say India is a poor country, whereas our Members of Parliament are not poor, but rich. What I request the reader of this article is to aspire to become a Member of Parliament at least once in their life time to enjoy the fruit of life as an MP.
