WASHINGTON (AP): A new poll shows Hillary Rodham Clinton is the Democrat's best hope for defeating Republican John McCain in the U.S. presidential election, as her rival, front-runner Barack Obama, struggles to overcome damage inflicted by his fiery former pastor.
The Associated Press-Ipsos poll released Monday showed a significant swing to Mrs Clinton among independents, young people and seniors who _ with her working-class Democratic base _ propelled her to a nearly 10 percentage-point victory last week in the Pennsylvania primary.
With that newfound support, Mrs Clinton gained ground this month in the hypothetical match with McCain, the Republican nominee-in-waiting, and now leads him 50 percent to 41 percent. Obama remains virtually tied with McCain, 46 percent to 44 percent.
Both Democrats were roughly even with McCain in the previous poll about three weeks ago.
Both Obama and Mrs Clinton campaigned in North Carolina on Monday, pushing supporters to go to the polls early in the southern state and in Indiana before both states hold primaries on May 6. Obama is favored in North Carolina while the two are competing closely in Indiana.
