Great way to control the control panel

Control panel is a component in a personal computer using which you can change most of the settings of the computer. Messing up with the control panel can result in serious problems in performance of your computer. So, it's is very important to keep it safe from others who use your computer. Here are some ways to restrict the control panel.

Control panel is indeed a very crucial part of a Personal Computer. You can find it in the Start Menu or just type 'control' in Run. You may have been advised when you were a basic/novice computer user, that 'don't go into the Control Panel'. The only reason for that was changing the setting in the control panel can affect the whole performance of a computer. For example you can even control the peripherals of your computer like, the speed of the mouse pointer, settings of the speakers, monitors, etc.

Let's see some of the most common items in the control panel:

Add/Remove Programs:

This item does the work to uninstalling installed programs in your computer. Double click on the icon and you will be brought up with a list of all the installed programs and drivers in your system. You can easily uninstall one of them by clicking on the software and clicking on the Remove button.

Mouse:

This is the item used for controlling the working of the mouse. You can change the speed of the mouse pointer, make it left handed or right handed, change the double click speed and many more interesting features.

User Accounts:

This item is very important for security measures. You can create or delete user accounts on your computer, password protect it and customize each account differently.

This item displays all the fonts available in your computer. You can remove or even install new fonts in your.

Network Connections:

This is a place where you can create new network connections, manage the settings of the existing connections, see the statistics and many more things as such.

Now, think how essential is the control panel to our computer? Do we take the necessary steps to protect the control panel from others who use our computer? If no, then start it. I have explained a simple way to hide/block the control panel from others. So, here's how we do it.

Hide the whole control panel:

This setting hides the whole control panel from the system i.e. if you try to find it by pressing the Start button you will find 'Control Panel' missing from the list. Even if you try to start control panel from the run command, you won't be able to do it. This step will definitely help you if there are many who use your computer. So, you need not tell them to avoid opening the control panel every time. Here's how you can do it.

Follow the steps given below:
  • Start the Local Group Policy Editor by going to Run and typing the term 'gpedit.msc' in it. Hit Enter key.

  • Browse to Control Panel under Administrative Templates under User Configuration.

  • Double click on 'Prohibit access to the control panel'.

  • Click on Enabled radio button. Click on Apply and then OK.

  • Now you will see that there is no link for control panel anywhere in your computer. If you want to show the control panel again, in place of Enabled radio button select the button Not Configured and click on OK.

Hide specific items in control panel:

This option will not hide the complete control panel i.e. the link to the control panel will be present in your computer and it will also be opened but here you have the option of deciding which items should not be shown to others. So, follow the steps below to do this:

  • Start the Local Group Policy Editor by going to Run and typing the term 'gpedit.msc' in it. Hit Enter key.

  • Browse to Control Panel under Administrative Templates under User Configuration.

  • Double click on 'Hide specified control panel items'.

  • Click on Enabled radio button.

  • Click on 'Show' under options.

  • Type the items to be hidden under the Value tab.

  • Click on OK. Click on Apply and again OK.

  • Now, you will notice that the items you typed in will not be shown in the control panel.

Show only specific items in control panel:

If you want to the opposite of the above setting you need to do this. Here, you have to specify the list of items that should be shown in the control panel. So, follow the steps given below:

  • 1. Start the Local Group Policy Editor by going to Run and typing the term 'gpedit.msc' in it. Hit Enter key.

  • 2. Browse to Control Panel under Administrative Templates under User Configuration.

  • 3. Double click on 'Show only specified control panel items.

  • 4. Click on Enabled radio button.

  • 5. Click on 'Show' under options.

  • 6. Type the items to be shown under the Value tab.

  • 7. Click on OK. Click on Apply and again OK.

  • Now, you will notice that only the items that you listed will be shown in the control panel. This option is helpful if the list of hiding items in larger. Now you have learnt how to restrict the control panel from others. Go ahead and try it. Have a nice computing.
