Five best Government merit scholarships (2012) for Indian students

At present cost of higher education become a big burden for poor and middle class parents. Parents have sought out some assistance from scholarship schemes sponsored by Central Government or State Government or big Private organizations to fill fill the dreams of their wards getting quality higher education. In this resource I gave an account of five scholarship schemes funded by Government of India or its subsidiaries for meritorious students.



Introduction


At present bearing the cost of higher studies for their children becoming a big burden for the parents. Even though their wards got seats in professional courses like Engineering, Medicine, MBA etc; economically weak parents are frightened to pay lakhs of rupees as fees for such courses. Some parents are going for bank loans and some other parents are wiping the dreams of their wards studying professional courses. Simply these parents are joining their wards in some general Degree courses which costs them less. But there are some widely unknown opportunities are there in the form of merit scholarships which are sponsored by Central Governments or State Governments or big Private Organizations. If the parents know these opportunities, they will get some economical assistance to full fill their dreams. I am giving details of some of the merit scholarship schemes sponsored by various Governments of India as well as some good private organizations.

1. Central Sector Scholarship Scheme (CSSS) for College and University students


Central Sector Government Scheme (CSSS) is funded by The Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Higher Education, Government of India. This scholarship scheme is meant for 82,000 students (41,000 for boys and 41,000 for girls) who are pursuing Graduate and Post Graduate studies in Colleges and Universities, and who are pursuing professional courses like Engineering, Medicine etc. This scheme is useful for the students who have passed Senior Secondary examinations (class XII) of 10+2 pattern or equivalent in 2012 year. Some percentage of scholarships will be set a side for those who passed through the qualifying examinations through CBSE and ICSE Boards. Remaining scholarships will be distributed among the students of other State Boards basing on the population of younger generation (20-25 years age) of the state. The scholarship will be given for Science, Commerce and Humanities streams of the Boards in the ratio of 3:2:1. The Scholarship for the students will be given only on merit basis.

2. Scholarship Amount


At Graduation level students will get Rs.1,000 per month for the first three years of the College and University courses. Rs.2,000 will be awarded for the Post Graduate courses for the scholars. Students pursuing professional courses will get will get Rs.2,000 per month as scholarship in the 3rd and 4th year of their studies. Tenure of the scholarships is ten months within an academic year.

3. Renewal of the scholarship


Scholarship scheme for the merit students is renewed on year to year basis. The renewal of the scholarship depend upon the scholar must secure a pass with 60% or more marks in aggregate in the Semester or Annual examination. Discipline and attendance of the student also will be taken into consideration for the renewal of this scholarship for the scholars. Any complaints regarding these issues will lead to the cancellation of these merit scholarships to these scholars.

4. Payment mode of the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme


Central Government pay this scholarship directly to the account of the scholar through the designated Bank Account opened for this purpose. If designated Bank is not there at that area this merit scholarship will be paid through ATM card without deducting any service tax. The payment of scholarship will start from the time of admission of the student to that course.

5. Important points to remember to apply for this merit scholarship


1. Students who passed 2012 Senior secondary examination (XII class)of 10+2 pattern who are pursuing Graduate or PG courses of colleges and Universities or who are pursuing professional courses like Engineering or Medicine etc. are eligible for this scholarship.

2. An applicant for this merit scholarship of all categories (SC, ST, OBC, UR must get 418 marks in first five subjects of Science, 396 in first five subjects of Commerce, 332 in first five subjects of other subjects.

3. The applicant must pursue his higher studies only through regular study but not through distance education or private study.

3. Total salary amount of both the parents together should not exceed 4.5 lakhs per Annum.

4. The applicant who is pursuing this scholarship should not avail any other scholarships.

5. Last date for applying this Merit scholarship is 31 October 2012.

2. Kishore Vigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY)


Kishore Vigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a program sponsored by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India to encourage students who are interested to pursue Research Career. Fellowships will be given by Government of India to encourage talented and enthusiastic students to take up Research Career.

Eligibility Criteria


1. Selection of the candidates for this fellowship is based on academic performance, excellence, demonstrated skill and interest to take up Research Career.

2. Candidates for this fellowship scheme will be taken separately from three different streams basing on the merit.

(a) Stream SA


Students who enrolled Class XI in science subjects during the academic year 2012-'13 are eligible for this merit fellowship. Candidates pursuing this fellowship from this stream must have secured 80% (70% for ST/SC) marks in aggregate in Maths and Science subjects in the X class Board's Examination. Those Board's giving grades, students have to convert their letter grade into appropriate percentage to fill up the Application Form.

(b) Stream SA- Mentoring Scheme


Eligibility criteria for this stream is as above. For students there is no need to reapply again for this mentoring scheme. A mentoring merit list will be prepared by KVPY and those students who enrolled for Under Graduated courses (B.Sc./B.S./Int. M.Sc./ M.S.) from this list, their fellowships will be activated. Students who are in Mentoring Scheme will be asked to attend Summer Programme/ Vijyoshi program. Expeses for this purpose are met by KVPY.

(c) Stream SX


Students who enrolled XII standard in Basic Sciences (B.Sc/B.S./Int.M.Sc./M.S.) in the academic year 2012-'13 are eligible for this fellowship. Students who secured 80% (70% for ST/Sc) in aggregate in Maths and Science subjects in class X are eligible for this fellowship.

(d) Stream SB


Students enrolled in the first year Under Graduate courses like B.Sc./B.S./Int.M.Sc./M.s. in the academic year 2012-'13 are eligible for this fellowship scheme. Candidates pursuing this fellowship must secure 80% (70% for ST/SC) in aggregate in Science subjects in their XII standard Board's Examination.

Fellowship Awards


Students selected in SA stream will get monthly fellowship of Rs.4,000 and an annual contingency of Rs.16,000. Students selected in SX/SB stream will get a monthly fellowship (during 1st to 3rd year) of Rs.5,000 and annual contingency of Rs.20,000. Students selected in SX/SB stream during M.Sc./during 4th to 5th year integrated M.Sc./M.s. will get a monthly fellowship of Rs.7,000 and an annual contingency of Rs.28,000.

Selection Procedure


At the first step, students will be selected on the basis of their academic performance in their Board's examination. Selected candidates will be asked to appear for a written Aptitude Test conducted at various centers of India on Sunday 4th November, 2012. Those candidates who are selected in Aptitude Test are called for an interview. Basing on their performance in Aptitude and interview, candidates will be selected on merit basis for these fellowships.

Important dates to apply for this Fellowship Scheme


1. Separate Application must be used for each stream.

2. Students may apply online (http://www.kvpy.org.in/) or through hard copy.

3. Last date for receipt of the request for Application by post 3rd September 2012, for online Application 7th September 2012, in person at IISc 7th September 2012. Last date of receipt of completed Application Form for both (online copy/Hard copy) is 12 th September 2012.

3. LIC Golden Jubilee Scholarship Scheme for students of economically weaker families


Life Insurance Corporation of India, a Government organization is sponsoring a scholarship scheme for students economically backward families who are pursuing for higher studies.

Scope of the Scholarship


The scholarships are awarded to the students of India who are pursuing their studies in Government or Private Colleges/Universities.
1. Students who are pursuing their higher studies in the field of Engineering, Medicine, Graduation in any discipline or other equivalent courses are eligible for this scholarship.

2. Students pursuing courses in ITI, Vocational courses through Government recognized colleges/institutes are also eligible for these scholarships.

Eligibility Criteria


a. Students who have secured 60% of marks in Class XII exam or its equivalent in the academic year 2011-'12 are eligible for this scheme. To get the merit scholarship for the above listed courses in (1), the parents income should not exceed Rs.1,00,000. To get the merit scholarship for the above listed courses (2), the student must secure 60% marks in X class Board's exam or its equivalent in the academic year 2011-'12 and the parents income should not exceed Rs.1,00,000.

Duration and Amount of Scholarship


The scholarship will be awarded through entire duration of the course to the scholar. Renewal of the scholarship is year wise basing on the performance of the academic year. The selected candidates for this scholarship will get Rs.10,000 per year and will be payable in ten monthly installments of Rs.1,000 each through a Bank Account opened on the name of the candidate separately.

Selection of the candidates for LIC Merit Scholarship


Selection of the candidates will be based on the academic performance of the student in XII class or X class Board's exams, family back ground, annual income of the family. Eligible students with lowest family income will be given preference for selecting candidates for this scholarship. Only one candidate will be given scholarship in a family.

Mode of Application

4. Post Graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child for PG Program 2012-'14


This is a scheme run by University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to provide Post Graduation Courses to a single child who is to be a girl in a family. The aim of this scheme is to give value to the norm of a small family in the society.

Eligibility Criteria


Any single child with in a family who must be a girl child is eligible for this scholarship. Such a girl child who has enrolled full time 1st year Master's Degree course in any recognized College/University is eligible for this scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded only to those who enrolled 1st year PG course only. A girl student up to 30 years of age will be considered for this scholarship.

Value of the scholarship


The girl candidates who are selected for this scheme will be given a scholarship of Rs.2,000 per month for a period of 2 years (10 months in a year) i.e. full duration of PG course. No other additional grant will be given like Hostel or Medical fees etc.

The number of scholarships given in an years depend on the number of eligible applications received before the last date of receiving applications.

5. Indian oil Academic Scholarships


Indian oil Corporation sponsoring 2000 scholarships for 10+/ITI students and 600 scholarships for candidates pursuing professional courses like Engineering, Medicine and MBA (Engineering-300, Mbbs-200 and Mba-100).

Indian Oil Merit Scholarship scheme for 10+/ITI Studies


The number of scholarships for this category are 2000. The distribution of these scholarships among the different States of India basing on the number of candidates who appeared for 10 th standard during the academic year 2011-'12. Candidates who apply for this scholarship must secure a minimum of 65% for general candidates, 60% for ST/SC/OBC/Girls, 50% for persons with disabilities in 2011-'12 X standard Board's Examination. The total income of the family of the candidate for the academic year 2011-'12 should not exceed Rs.1,00,000 for availing this scholarship. Candidates with a family income of Rs.60,000 will be given preference over others with more income. The candidates who are selected in this category merit scholarship scheme will get a monthly scholarship of Rs.1000 for the full duration of this course.

Indian Oil Merit Scholarship Scheme for Graduate and Post Graduate Students


The number of scholarship in this category are 600. These scholarships will be given to those candidates who are pursuing professional courses Engineering-300, Medicine-200 and MBA-100. The distribution of these scholarships is based on Zone wise (South,North,West and East) basing on the number of students who appeared for XII standard Board's Examination. Candidates who apply for this scholarship must secure a minimum marks of 65% for General category students, 60% for ST/SC/OBC/Girls and 50% for persons with disabilities in the XII standard Board's Examination during the academic year 2011-'12. The total income of the family of the candidate for the academic year 2011-'12 should not exceed Rs.1,00,000 for availing this scholarship. Candidates with a family income of Rs.60,000 will be given preference over the others with more income. The candidates who are selected in this category of scholarship will get a monthly scholarship of Rs.3,000 for full duration of this score.
